Found a few fleas-trying something new

Well, after having terrific luck with avoiding fleas here in South FL, Mig picked up a few. It's really hard to see those things on a dark dog! I gave him a bath and ACV rinse, and washed bedding/sprinkled DE where he hangs out. Apparently he's really allergic to the bites and scratched like crazy for the next several days. I ordered Zymox shampoo and rinse and it really helped. I had been putting Halo herbal dip on their harnesses and it worked well, but nothing is foolproof. I ordered a spot-on monthly made from geranium oil that's supposed to be good-we'll see. I still have hangups about putting chemicals on them month after month. I also made a spray with the halo dip.
I'll report back on my findings with the geranium stuff. I haven't put it on them yet.
Hate those *&^% things..

I hate those you know what things too. I still have borax around after using ten time's the amount I was suppose too. I gave the sister's one chemical treatment . waited a week and gave them a bath and rinsed with ACV. Its been a month and so far so good. It will be great to find out if your natural oils work.

As long as you let the dogs out in the outdoors, you will have fleas. I have my house sprayed quarterly and the back fenced area is treated, but I let Rosie go with me to see the calves and sure enough she picked up a flea or two. Scratched all night and got bath first thing in the morning. I only found one. I use comfortis and I guess it will soon be time to start giving it to her again. Then there is the heartworm problem. If you have ever had a dog with heartworms, you know not to let that happen again. I would like to find one pill that would do both.

Ain't it the truth-if they're outside the time will come. Now as far as heartworm, they were on interceptor, but they ceased production for a really long time and I had to find an alternative. My vet said he prefers ivermectin in heartguard over the ingredient in interceptor. They actually think it's a treat and scarf it up. I don't even care that you can buy interceptor now. There are natural heartworm products, but that's something I'm not taking a chance on.

We had a sheltie-collie mix that had heartworms about 40 years ago. We had no idea what or how and at time there was no preventive. Lord she got them again in a couple of years. Finally when the preventive was well known, I was able to give to my dogs. My mother didn't -- lived in MS at the time--and her dog never got them. She didn't even put flea preventive on hers. When she lived next door to me, I battled fleas all the time and mother never had a problem with her dog. But her dog went out to potty and straight back in the house and she didn't have carpet either. No where for them to hide I guess. I have read about the natural remedies for Heartworm, but I love my Rosie to much to take a chance.

I've, fortunately, been able to find Interceptor and have kept my dogs on it. I have 2 collies and some shelties too. Many collies have bad reactions, even die, from ivermectin and some Shelties, so I've stayed away from them. I could test them for MDR1 sensitivity, but since I've not had a problem getting Interceptor haven't.
Last summer we had a flea problem, first in many years. We do have the exterminator come monthly and spray the perimeter of the house, but not inside. I'm a bit of a worrier about insecticides. I was rinsing with ACV and sprinkling DE and even putting some DE on the dogs, but we still had fleas. One of the vets I go to is as anti-insecticide as I. I talked to her. She said she'd had the same problem and decided to attack the fleas vigorously. She recommended continuing what I was doing, alternate frontline and advantage dosing every two weeks and if I took them anywhere giving them a capstar before returning home. I was also to spray the exercise yard with Bayer insecticide. I did this for 6 weeks and no more fleas since last July. I think when spring comes I'll do the flea meds, alternating once a month and hope our problem is solved forever.
