My neighbor is buying a puppy from Craig's List

This post is going to be long:

I posted couple of times already that we are going to have our new puppy this Friday. So now my neighbors got all excited about the puppy and so did their kids and they wanted to get a shih-tzu...I thought...great! Odeio will have great company! And yesterday they were at my place to get "recommendations" on what to buy for the puppy. I was surprised since they decided on the breed just this past Tuesday (it took them 20 min to decide on the breed, Reasons: they thought Shih-Tzu was cute and one of their friends had a Shih-Tzu) and was wondering how they found a puppy that fast. Well, they went online to craigs list and contacted a "breeder" who was selling puppies from a Walmart parking lot. They went on Saturday to meet the "breeder" and puppies (apparently mommy and daddy are both his dogs). They picked their puppy and haggled for the price (from $600 to $450) and finalized the deal.

Here are the hi-lights :

They saw the puppies in Wal-mart parking lot, the "breeder" said they did not have to travel all the way and could bring puppies close by.

The puppies are 5 weeks old now, no teeth, he said they had to take them by this weekend (Feb 15th) if not he will have to give them to someone since he had people "bidding" for his puppies.

So they will be bringing home a 6 week old puppy with no teeth not on any kind of solid food and they are planning to buy formula and bottle feed the puppy

He showed them CKC registration papers for mommy and daddy, but the address on it does not exist.

He told them that the puppy (at 5 weeks) received all immunizations and that the vet cleared him to go to his new home.

They have not asked me for guidance or advise on any of these, so I'm not sure if it's my place to warn them or not?

Just had to vent, thanks for listening.

Oh goodness - that is just so sad. Did they take the puppy already? No puppy should be seperated at 6 weeks from its mother!! Obviously this was someone from a mill type situation.

If I were you, I would be sure that their dog is totally - 100% healthy before putting the pups together. Changes are the puppy they get will have worms, and could have a multitude of other things coming home with it.

I would say that if you think you could talk them of it - then try. But anyone who is willing to "talk a price down" like that - is not looking for a good quality puppy - just simply looking for a "deal"

If they haven't already paid I would talk to them. That puppy could end up costing them three time the amount there paying. Ask them to call a vet and see what they say about the situation.

This is so sad I guess they will need the money they haggled to pay all of the vet bills in their future. I"m sure there are some good links/resources, maybe you could email or print them up something from online, too late to prevent it this time, but maybe next time they will go about it the right way

I came across a similar situation a few times. You can't fix stupid and ignorant. Of course the poor puppies didn't ask for any of it. These people are selfish, cheap and lazy.

Yes, that's the bottom line. The puppies didn't ask for any of it, much less the poor breeding dogs left behind. Sad world we live in.
You can try to educate them- maybe even refer them to this site to determine how to find a good breeder?
Good luck.

no cure for stupid. Educate them as best you can. It is either a puppymill or backyard breeder. 5 weeks is too young and puppy will lack social skills that it will learn from it's mom and siblings and can have a lifetime of issues because of the early separation.

Eeek!! Keep your puppy far away from theirs!! It won't have had any of its shots, especially distemper. Very scary. Don't even walk your puppy in the same area as theirs. Blame your vet. Say that your vet wants you to keep the puppy away from other dogs until Odieo finishes all of his booster shots at 12 or 14 weeks I think.

TTFN,
Pam
