Update on My Pup

Hi All,

Just shouting out to say hello! We've had Willoughby for a full week now (and a couple days) and we are all having so much fun with him. He's sleeping well and eating well. He has a blast with my boys (ages 6 & 10) and his favorite thing to do is run around with them outside. He's just as sweet as can be.

He is in that puppy chewing phase though and rips the socks right off the boys feet! lol! Any suggestions on how to tame that? He has lots of chew toys and we don't let him do that. He also wants to chew on our fingers and toes. Any input on staving chewing on the people would be so appreciated!

Anyway, we are still so grateful every day that you all "convinced" me because he has brought so much joy to this house.

And here is a pic of Wills with my older son.

My only advice is to offer chew toys instead...say 'no' when he's chewing on socks, arms, etc. and offer his chew toy. Our hav loves bully sticks.

He's precious. Enjoy.

Christy,
What a cute son and pup!It sounds like you all are adjusting quite well to Willoughby and him to you!

I would tell him a firm "no" and offer something like a bully stick or chew toy instead for the socks...for biting/chewing on fingers/toes...a firm "no" and remove him to crate if he doesn't stop after a correction or 2.He'll catch on very quickly.

He is so so cute!!!! I hate to tell you but they are like potato chips...can't have just one...wait and see. they steal your heart in a skinny minute.
As for chewing, sometimes if you have the children make a yelping noise like a littermate would, they know they have"hurt" them and it does help curb some of the nipping at children's feet...etc.

He's adorable - and so is your son.

Everyone's advice has been great! It's all worked for us in the past.

You can add value to the chew toy by playing with it a bit while enticing him to chew on the toy.

When our pups nipped, we would say 'ouch' or make a yelping sound and pull our hand/foot away. Play would stop until the pup settled down a little bit.

You guys sound like you're having a blast and doing really well!

How wonderful that things are working out! Havs really are the perfect breed of dogs and your Willoughby is a real cutie!

There are a lot of threads on nipping/biting with a lot of advice in them. Here are some of them for you to look at:

Oh my Willoughby and your son are soo adorable. we used a firm no and sometimes we would turn our back or walk out of the room. pups soon learn that this behavior means attention stops.
