Flying question

Has anyone had a problem checking in with a Sherpa? I am going to fly down to D/FW and pick up a rescue Maltese for my friend on American Airlines. On their website they give the guidelines for a pet carrier as being only 9" tall. I went to Petsmart and the Sherpa's were all over 9" but were marked "approved by ABC airlines".

I'd be sick if I got down there then ran into a problem with getting the dog on the plane because the carrier was an inch too tall.
Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Beverly

Beverly- make sure it is soft sided and you will be safe. I don't think they usually measure.

Amanda

P.S.
Is this the lil maltese I am aware of?

I have flown many times with sherpa bags. They fit just fine, I had the largest one and on a couple planes it was a little tight fitting but it still worked and the dog stay comfortable too.

The sherpa bag is fine. As long as it's soft sided, like Amanda mentioned, it will fit under the seat.

I had the SAME concern, but we didn't have ANY problems at all, nobody checked it and it does have some 'give' so, it fits under the seat just fine.

I only had her under the seat for take off and landing, the rest of the time, I either had the Sherpa on my lap (open) OR, I just took her out and put her on my lap. No problems.

You do have to scan the Sherpa bag, so just be sure to have a leash/harness or collar to walk the dog through the security checkpoint.

Thanks everyone!

This will be my first experience flying with a dog. Yes Amanda, the little Maltese boy that you saw John has already named him Winston.
I was hoping to go this weekend, but last minute fares are horrible I'm afraid , so unfortunately it looks like I may be waiting until Nov. 3 now.

Thanks!

I am so excited for John. I think if you were to ever have one dog... a maltese can be a great choice. Especially people who love personality galore because believe me, you think they are tiny but boy oh boy, do they have personality!

Sometimes you can get the last minute fares like the day before, so check!

I was with a group of dog fanciers that fly frequently and they were bragging about which airlines they never paid for the dog to fly... <BG> I guess you need to be brave and have a quiet dog!

LOL! Really??? How did they get away with that!

When I took Gucci through security, they checked to make sure that she was listed on my ticket! I just can't imagine getting away with that, but I don't think the they checked on the way back.

Spill it! Which airline is lax about it? LOL

I heard lots of whispering about sneaking dogs on planes when I was in Denver, I would think it would all start with the right attitude!
