Fostering/Rescuing

I decided to start a new thread as to not hijack the bag/stroller thread. I know a few of you are fostering or adopting or helping a friend so I thought this would help.

It has been awhile since I have fostered but I have moved and I am now working full time and now have a small place but something I was really scared to do being young and not having much dog experience but I found it very easy!

Here is the little guy we had:

That is my husband to a T. He was like amanda, I fall in love with everything and there is no way I am going to give it up if it has 3 legs and one eye (the dog he bought that lives with his parents has 1 eye, cd, tons of health problems). Well, I took Avy in and he was absolutely loved. He was from a puppy mill originally but a couple had him for 9-10 months. He loved people but he had no manners. He would jump up in your face, he would jump on top of the table, etc. He grew up with 2 truckers (literally who drove cross country) and wasn't in a house so he knew no rules. My job was to socialize him and make him understand rules without letting him kill himself as he was a "bull in a china shop." He literally learned in order to get pet, he had to sit the first day. Isabelle helped like crazy. She doesn't like chaos and will take control so fast, your eyes spin. She let him know what wasn't right and what was and she probably did more for him, than I did. I was lucky because I took Avy to a Havanese gathering a week after he came to my house. There was a family there that was looking to adopt but they didnt want a little fussy dog. Well Avy was anything but. He needed a high energy home and they had 2 children, and the mom was a marathon runner. They wanted to take him home that day!!! I didn't feel he was quite ready and a week later, they didn't leave me alone about him, we did a weekend to make sure he fit in with their older dog and it was perfect! I ran into them at a 5K pet run, I don't think I could have given him as good of a home... that is what fostering is all about!

That is such a nice story. I know my hubby just doesnt want to deal with the extra work, but I love the feeling of being able to do something like that. I am gonna call this person whos name they gave me, I will probably use the cell phone that we dont use often, just in case, and see what up with him.
It is strange to me that even though they have a baby & dont feel they can care for him, why does he need a bath & haircut - do these people "just give up, stop caring for the dog?" I hope he is being fed!!

Amanda, that's a really great story! I think it's great when people foster dogs. I wish I could do it but in my one bedroom apartment it's just not possible. Maybe when I move into a bigger place it would be more plausible for me to do so.

Exactly!!!!!!

I mean, how hard it is to give a dog a bath or take him to the groomers?

Needs a bath? Come on' people. That's downright neglect. I hope he's getting fed, too.

Amanda, that is such a touching story! How cool that you found the perfect home...I hate to see high-energy dogs end up with lazy couch potatos, like my neighbors. *sigh*

I don't know how much more I can stand. That dog barks ALL day long and is in the backyard alone. Not to hijack the thread or anything...

But maybe I can suggest to them to find someone to foster him? LOL

OK KARA - TO MAKE YOU HAPPY
I will make my 3000th post about fostering, but cannot make an announcement about adding to the pack!! I really have to research this little guy, and of course convince you know who!! I think I can find him a possible home first (which I might have already) then he would let me take him for a while. But for all I know someone already took him. If I did foster him, I would have to go to a different groomer cause mine is always booked for weeks in advance -- but that poor baby must be miserable!!
Who knows - maybe my pack will temporarily grow!! If I had my druthers, I would not be working and running this business, I would be home fostering, or breeding!!!

Laurie, CONGRATS on your 3,000th post!

I'm sure it would be great for you to be able to foster that little guy but it's good that you are actually researching more about him before you jump into something blindfolded!

Oh yea, and I might ask to meet him two. I would never want to put my three babies at risk by bringing home an agressive dog - we will see, I dont think it is going to happen, simply because I am sure someone has snatched him up already - but you never know! Its certainly not like I dont have the room!

Laurie-congrats on your 3000th post!
Definitely go meet him. I would call your groomer and say, hey I have a rescue dog can you get him in and you may be suprised... most of them are dog people! My vet saw the dog free of charge cause he cut his paw when being walked and stepped on glass! So feel free to let people know, take advantage of any help you can get as well!
