Neutering question

Marley had his last set of shots yesterday and while I was at the vet's office I asked about more info for the neutering. They had recommended doing it at 6 months (Marley is 4 months now), so I want to get ready.

They quoted me $385.....I guess that comes with a pre-op visit where they make a customized anestesia profile for your dog, they keep him over night with 24 hour care etc. etc.

It's not just the price tag that is making me question this, but I really don't think I want him gone over night unless that is common procedure...he hates being away from me and the rest of the family and having the procedure done is stressful enough...

Soooo... are there different methods out there for the neutering? I mean - anyone picking up a $100 dog from the pound surely isn't going to fork over almost $400 and there they always made it sound like it's no big deal....this sounds like they are making it a huge thing at my vet's office.

Are there different kinds of anestesia, recommended, not recommended?

I did a search, but couldn't find details on the operation part, but if there are previous threads, please guide me there!!

Hi Alexa,

Beamer's neuter cost me $385. This included pre-op blood panel to make sure all organs are functioning properly.
Also included pain meds and everything else invloved.
Beamer got to go home late afternoon. But I've heard some vets keep them overnight? I would assume its up to you if you want to leave him or take him home!

The price sounds about right.

Do NOT let them keep him overnight if they do not have staff at the facility to stay with Marley and keep an eye on him. Some veterinary clinics don't have staff and want to keep the dog which seems ridiculous. At least you can keep an eye on him at home.

Isoflorane (or is it isoflorine?) is the safest of the anesthesias.

I am shocked at what you all are paying the vets. You need to live in the South. I had Hank neutered for a little over $100. That included everything you all are talking about (blood tests, and the whole nine yards). I took him in early in the morning and picked him up at 5:00 p.m. the same day. He was still drowsy when I picked him up, but he did just fine, and healed quickly. (He was running around the next day) He was 6 months old when we had him neutered.

That's about what I paid as well. Gryff came home at 5:30. Unless there are some complications, I don't think they need to stay overnight. Gryff was perfectly fine when he got home.

I'm having Lily spayed in November and my Vets office has quoted me $135.00for everything, she will come home the same day. But I did ask for a quote from the Vets office that I take her to for grooming and their price was close to $300.00. I've never called different vet offices for prices, but obviously there is quite a range.

Squirt is being spayed next week. The vet charges $150 and I take her home at 4:30 the same day.

There is a county clinic here that neuters twice a month for free. I just didn't feel comfortable going with the free clinic.

I am getting Jax neutered on Friday. Our estimate is $360 which includes full blood panel, laser surgery, pain meds & i am having him microchipped. He will come home in the afternoon. I will NOT leave him there unless he has problems(even then i would be hard pressed). They tell me the laser surgery is much less invasive so healing time is much quicker.

I could have had it done thru the SPCA for $45(a co-worker suggested it-no blood work or meds). Not that there is anything wrong with them but i was just not comfortable with doing that.

Karen, i live in the south & i used to live in Fla. I have had dogs for years &- I never saw an estimate for $100 which included blood work, pain meds & surgery for that price. You must live in a great area!

Monte was almost $400.00 as well. My vet did mention I could drop him off the night before if I did not want to do the fasting but I kept him home with me. I was supposed to pick Monte up between 4-5 and the vet called me to pick him up at noon. He would not settle down well for them and they felt he would rest better at home so they asked me come early and then called me around 3 to make sure all was still o.k.

I would tell your vet Marley has separation anxiety and you would hate to put him through any more stress and feel he would do better at home with you. They donít need to know itís not true.

Yikes, I am on the East Coast and of course that seems to mean higher prices. I too spend somewhere in the vicinity of $360 for mine too.
