Be prepared!!!

Hey guys!!!!!
Last night we had some pretty bad storms come through our area ......Tornado activity and all!!! Not much fun. My husband and I live out in the country in a one story home with no basement.....which stinks. We wanted to keep ourselves safe as well as our babies. We put there leashes on them.....which they thought that they were going to go for a walk.......yikes not out in that weather. I just thought that it would be helpful to know what you would do during bad weather. We would put Jillee in her crate and then keep the other two on there leashes!!!! All was well here no touch downs but it sure was not fun My lab was sooo scared I thought she may get sick but she didn't. Once we thought that it was over we just kept there leashes and a flash light by the bed just in case.....you never know around here!!!! If anyone else has any suggestion please let us all know so that we can protect our babies!!!!

Megan, I think you were wise to think to put on their leashes.

We don't have thunderstorms here, but I was just trying to think of options that may help. Do you have a room in the center of the house - like a bathroom that doesn't have windows or an outside wall? Could you put them in that room with a battery-operated radio playing some music as a distraction next time?

Do you have your Lost Dog posters ready? Here is a previous topic on the subject.

Do you have a disaster kit ready in case you lose power or water for a couple of days?

For your lab, you may want to consider asking your veterinarian if he/she can prescribe or recommend anything that you can give her when you get a severe storm warning. You can also buy conditioning tapes to play for non-storm times to get her used to the sounds that come with a storm.

I do know that we need to kit our kit made....we were at a dog show that gave us info on what to put in it. The only inside area we have is a closet so we will have to all cram in there if we have to next time....that will be a sight to see us two and three dogs!!!!!!! We do have stickers on our windows saying how many animals we have in our house....and they all have tags on them....we are getting the microchip as well. I did not think of the lost dog poster...we will have to make one for them.....I huess I never really thought of that. Thanks so much for the tips....but I hope we do not have to use them. I did try some med from the vet for our lab but it did not work.....she just likes to be in bed with us when it is storming.....that seems to soothe a little bit!!!!

Megan, if you go to the AKC website, they have a list of what should go in a "disaster" kit for your pets. My daughter got two big plastic bins from Home Depot - one is the human kit and one is the dog kit. Food, water, first aid, and lots of other stuff.

I just went thru earthquake (I experienced my first one and didn't notice!) and other disaster training at work and I realized how unprepared I truly am... I have a flash light some where!!! I am going to work on a disaster kit as well. They have freeze dried kibble to place in it that last for 8 years!

Talk about warm, we are still in the mid to upper 70's and they are saying 80 by Monday. This will be the warmest Oct on record if this keeps up. Not good...lots of colds, fleas are still here. I love warm weather, though.

Our storms probably weren't as bad (although we did lose power for quite a few hours), but when I took Marley down to the mailbox (on his leash), it was almost like flying a kite (a very furry one), so I figured I'd better pick him up <g>

Oh Megan, I hate tornado season. I remember a couple years ago talking to my mom on the phone, I could hear the sirens going off, I was trying to track the tornadoís on line to see where they had touched down then all of a sudden the phone went dead. I jumped out of my seat and started running, I have no idea where I thought I was going my mom lives 1000 miles away. That scared the crap out of me, luckily everything was fine.

My only suggestion is do you have a room with no windows? Usually the bathroom is the safest room in the house, the extra framing and piping gives the room more support. Bring cushions from your couch to cover your head and get in the bathtub. Also if a tornado does touch down donít forget to open a couple of windows, Iím sure you know all of this living in Indy and seeing how in school you not only have fire drills but tornado drills as well but it is always a good reminder. Stay safe.

Oh and if you feel wild and dangerous could you run outside and tape one for me, I love watching tornadoís, I should have been a storm chaser.
