SEPARATION ANXIETY at ONE YEAR?

I've had the craziest half day w/Biscuit. We went to his last obedience class and graduation last night, and it was wild, but he did well. Later I put him in his crate to go to bed as usual, and he cried and fussed and threw his body against the crate! I checked on him and comforted him, and then put him back in. Same thing repeated. But I didn't go down again, and after a half hour he calmed and slept normally.

Understand that this is a one year old dog, who only fussed for 10 minutes the first two nights he was in our home at 12 wks of age, and has slept entirely through the night 8--12 hrs ever since.

Then, as per the car seat debacle I posted about yesterday, I put him in the lookout seat in the BACK seat to go to the dogsitter's this AM, and he cried piteously the entire way, and broke loose from his harness as we neared her house.

I'm such a wreck I feel like I need a martini and it's just past noon, LOL. There's nothing worse than hearing him cry like that. It's like reliving colic with my firstborn all over again, LOL. I think this may be the beginning of SA. Thanks for letting me vent, we are actually leaving for a long wkend at the beach w/friends momentarily. Has anyone else has this experience w/an older dog???

HAV A GREAT DAY ! ~~AMY & BISCUIT~~
and HEATH-Y, TOO !

Honey,

Is your luggage out?

Remember when I went to Biloxi for a weekend and then a few weekends later I had to go to Dallas on business? Well, as soon as the luggage came out, miss Gucci went into a depression and was even putting her jerky in my luggage and laying in it! Talk about NOT wanting me to forget her. Not to mention, when I got home...she slept ON TOP OF ME!

Maybe he senses that you are leaving and a lil' bout of depression?

I think they DO have "bad days", just like us...I am also watching your saga with the carseat intently! I talked to DH again about it, but I know she will be utterly rebellious and strong willed in the car

Or..maybe he's feeling a bit under the weather? I know that can make them whiney

hugs,
Kara

Amy, Jasper got more anxious after he was a year. I think they understand things more and it makes more of an impression on them. I agree with the luggage being out--- or just sensing that something unusual is up- they are very perceptive. Go back and read the chapter about fear periods and seperation anxiety. I think I read it here that there is another fear period at about a year that no one talks about. But Jassy sure went through it.

Not sure how to help, in fact I'll be watching this thread for suggestions with the separation anxiety, but I do know how to mix up a mean Cosmopolitan <g>

Amy, I am so sorry that Biscuit is feeling depressed and anxious. I can relate to you a little bit as Benji is having a little bit of separation anxiety lately. He gets very subdued when he realizes that I am leaving home for work or to run errands. He keeps his head on my foot, doesn't leave my side, cuddles all the time. This is an entirely new thing as he is quite independent and when we are home, he tends to be nearby but not cuddle.

After I get home, he doesn't leave me alone, he cuddles for a long time and when he is sure that I am going to be home, he starts to wander about a little bit.

I think that Biscuit knows that you will be gone for sometime and that has made him anxious. I hope he settles comfortably so that you can enjoy your mini-vacation.

Best, Poornima

Sissy is 2 yr 8 mos. and she gets anxious - she doesn't cry when I leave her at home - but when I am getting ready - she will follow me from room to room and sit and stare at me like what are you doing???? I leave her run of the house and she does fine.

When we were at the hotel last week and I went down to eat breakfast and DH stayed with Sissy - he said she cried after I left. Also, we were going to make a quick run and leave her at the hotel room with our son - she would not have anything to do with that - she wanted her mommy. I had to take her. She was anxious because we were away from home.

She wore me like a dress the whole time.

Sorry biscuit is having a hard time.

Maybe last night's episode was due to the excitement of his class graduation and your emotions from that event. These dogs can be so intuitive to our feelings that it wouldn't surprise me if he was wound up from the celebration.

As for the car seat, he may be exercising a little juvenile rebellion. Much like children, some dogs go through a canine version of the "terrible two's" but between 1-2 years old. At least, that's been our experience.

If you're in the car with him, it doesn't sound like SA.

Hopefully he'll grow out of it soon!
