Dog Friendly Summer Vacations

I know, I know...... it's only fall, but we are trying to figure out next year's vacation budget/ideas/plans for the family and have spent all day at the computer looking and wondering.

I know many of you travel with your Havs. We are specifically looking for summer rentals that allow dogs, on the eastern U.S. coast. Let's say, from Maine to Cape May, New Jersey. I dont' want to spend two days in the car!

There is this site: http://www.petvr.com/index.php/pages/Beachesindex.html which shows pet friendly beaches and we've checked a few places out.
www.vacationrentals.com also has some good suggestions and there are a couple of spots we like in Maine.

We are looking for a cottage on or very near to a beach, with our two Havs, and that has room for at least 5 adults (our youngest is 13). I would love to pick your brains a bit and see what some of you might suggest. No, we don't do camping or rv'ing or it would be much easier.... well, that depends on who you ask. NOT easier for ME! ugh! lol

It's never too early to book the perfect vacation!!

We love Cape Cod. We usually stay in Provincetown. Very pet friendly, dogs are allowed on the beach, leashed. However, we stay on the bayside, and when the tide goes out, everyone just lets their dogs off leash to play. We stay at the Cape Inn. It's not fancy, but clean and the dogs love it there. There are cottages available, but they book up very fast.

While we were there in Sept, I watched their town meeting on TV. They have just approved building a dog park there, which might be done by next summer.

We didn't get a nice pampered pouch package but Jim and I rented a cabin in Hocking Hills- southern Ohio for the weekend. We were able to take the girls, it was a 3 bedroom and full basement. It had a ping pong table, hot tub, etc. But Dora's favorite part was the 15 acres of woods it was sitting on. We let the girls go running in the woods. We also went to the state park hiking that allowed for dogs. Mind you, they were totally exhausted muddy messes each night and I didn't do any grooming... so my vacation was over when I got home but they had a blast!

Another place that I was shocked at how dog friendly it was- Vancouver, BC. I visited a havanese friend while I was there and the dogs were on the buses, the water taxis, the restaurants (as long as you sit outside), the shops, etc. There is even a waterfront dog park near downtown! I regretted not taking the girls!

Amanda those pictures are wonderful. I may just have to stop on my way to my sisters in Kettering.

Marj, what part of Maine were you looking at? Are you looking for any specific activities or just ralaxing on the beach?

I discovered this site: vrbo.com last night and saw a bunch of great places. I've saved them and will have hubby look at them soon.

That place in Maine, Inn by the Sea, unfortunately, is waaaaaaaay over our budget. A two-night stay 'special' is $1000 and the average daily rate for a week in August is $569 . A day ! Ouch!! It looks amazing though!!!!! Very nice, very pet-friendly.

Leeann, we are looking for a place that either is on the beach or has access to it and no more than 1 mile away let's say. We'd be going with 2 teen boys and our then 13 yr. old daughter who says all she cares to do is go to the beach, read and shop. So she's easy! lol

We can't afford some of the houses I've seen at $3-$4 grand a week, so it needs to be affordable. I will look at that vrbo.com site with Ralph later on and maybe we'll decide on one of those.

Oh. And yes. I realize there is a MUST with contacting other Hav forum members should we be in the area!

Thanks for the tips!

Yes Marj, any rentals on the ocean will be 2-3 + grand a week, notice how I said a place in Maine I would love to TRY.. crazy prices in this area. Try looking a little in land the prices do get better. You also may want to look at Cape Cod a little more like Michele suggested. No matter what town you are in you are close to the ocean. "P" town is great, a lot of little shop, outside eating and beaches. You could also hop the ferry and go over to Martha's vinyard for a day, both the ferry and buses are free for Sammy & Ricky.

I love both the cape & Maine and spend time in both every year, some towns are very busy and others are more quite, depends on what you want.
I have also spent a lot of time researching and visiting different area's, dont be afraid to ask if you find something and would like a little more info.

Marj,. I already have our vacation planned for next year at the beach. We go to Avalon, NJ but the problem is that the dogs are not allowed on the beach. WE do rent a house that allows us to bring the dogs. If you find a place that allows dogs on the beach, then call the real estate agents in that town & maybe they can find a pet friendly rental for you
