Cool anyone try raw diet? cooked?

Hi, I am new to the forum. I have a beautiful 11 month old boy "Jasper"-- who has been a picky eater all his life. I have donated more bags of kibble to the local humane society. He has turned his nose up at 100% canned buffalo. I started cooking for him and he turned his nose up at that after 2 weeks.

When he was little he would vomit bile from hunger but still wouldn't eat.

About a month ago, I discovered Natures Variety Raw medallions in "rabbit" (the vet thought allergies might be causing his finickyness, so I tried to stay away from chicken and beef) -- I couldn't bring my self to feed it to him raw so I micrwave it. Well, we almost got to the end of the 2nd bag with great results. He just gobbled up those medallions. and even started eating some kibble (eagle pack)

He is now refusing it again. He ate a few meals of the Natures Variety beef-- but now is turning his nose up again at both the beef and the rabbit. This is his only "little dog" trait and he is not too skinny --- he hasn't vomited in a few months.

Is this just life as a Hav owner? Should I stop worrying? Do you think It's ok to cook the raw diet? So many questions. If I can figure out how to jassy's picture I will. Thanks for listening

Some times the Havanese will do that but it can also be just because he knows you will give him something else in other words he is working you! My yoda did the same thing very picky eater I gave away a ton of differenty kibbles too. When I decided to give him raw I told him you will eat this or go hungry. The first 3 days he decided to go hungry and I kept feeding him at the same time when he would walk away from his food I picked it up and threw it away Yoda would look at me like why did you do that mom. I would tell him your next meal is at lunch time and if you do the same thing I will do the same thing. Finally one night at dinner he decided to eat it. When he did eat I did a lot of prasing him good boy yoda pet pet pet type thing.next morn he didnt want it this went on for abouta week or so.Finally he got it threw his head this is it he eats the raw down fast now cause he knows I will take it away.So for your question dont worrie to much if he gets hungry enough he will eat.I defrost my raw I set it out on the counter very rarly do I mic it. It does not take long to defrost.Yoda eats the beef chicken lamb I never tryed rabbit.Have you tryed the lamb yet ? Just dont think about it being raw food think of raw as a name I know I thought ewww raw food now I just think it is the name and it dont bother me as much. ON your picture go to gallery then in the right corner a little way down it says upload click on that once it switches screens hit browse and you want to look for where you keep your pictures at most keep them under my pictures once you fine the pic you want click on it and just follow the promts I hope this helps Susan

Although my first Hav (now 3 yrs old) ate her food, she was finicky in the beginning and up until she was about 1 1/2 - 2 years old she would throw up bile every day. It just seemed as if she outgrew it after a while and has not gotten sick in about a year. I agree with Susan as my dogs are on the vet SO diet and have to be because of a metabolic issue - and if they wont eat it, they get nothing else. Eventually they figured out, if I dont eat it, I will be hungry till next feeding time!!

I have been feeding Nutro all natural lamb and rice, But like you say, They are very picky eaters. Derian will grab a bite or two and take off to play and ever once in awhile while I am supervising him, He will dash back to the bowl to take another small bite.

What I have tried is placing kibble in a small bag moistened with luke warm water and as he is playing outside, I'll get his attention by making sure he has eye contact with me, Letting him smell several pieces of kibble in my hand and call him towards me. He rares up on his hind legs all excited and then I place kibble in front of him and he gobbles it up this way. I give him lot's of petting along with praise. Weird I know and probably a very bad habit, But this is how I end up getting him to eat an entire portion of food.

thanks all! nice to know I am not alone. And oh yes AL, Japer too will eat all the kibble I will give him if I make him do tricks and then feed him a few pieces at a time---but if I put down in his plate he won't eat.

Yea it sounds like he is working you.Just remember if you keep doing it that way then you will end up doing it for the rest of his life think of doing it that way for 15 years +I sure wouldnt want to . I leave my food down for 10 mins period and if he didnt eat then he would not even get a treat he would half to eat the next meal all gone first.like we all know they are very smart dogs . I treat Yoda like he was a 2 year old child there is not much of a difference in the child and dog when they are young.REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT sad to say.I do the same thing with my grandson that I watch daily. He too has learn its my way or no way I am the boss. These little dogs if you let them just like a child will walk all over you.And they will if you let them.It might sound silly but I tell yoda what I want and when I want not him telling me.Even potty training . I broke them both grandson and Yoda you just have to use common sense there bladder is smaller than an adult potty training a child you take them all the time same as a dog no difference. And if you are intune with your dog you will know how often ect. I hope this helps just tell your dog " YOU ARE THE BOSS!!!! and never never back down its all in follwing threw every time. Susan

Thanks Susan. he knows we're boss in every other area--- I will try harder

By the way--- why does everyone say corn is so bad? there is a kibble that he eats (back to basics) that has ground corn as the 2nd ingredient. Wouldn't they come by corn in the wild as much as fruit or root vegetables? just wondering.

great forum- I'm glad I found it. still working on th picture.

You are so welcome I know its hard when you see your dog not eating you think they are going to starve . This is a great form you will get LOTS of tips and opions what to do and not what to do.If you look on the ingred. of alot of dry food ect the first few ingred. is WHEAT corn ect. they are fillers there is no nutriion vaulve in them. So why would any one want to give there animal a filler? Its all waste nothing more. That has no propise .Raw is a really good product all natural.Just like with people if you want to stay health what do you do? Eat right good food and excerise right? same with any animal.I beleave if you dont know ask so ask all you want no matter how stupid or silly it may sound.I have learn so many things from this sight and others and readling alot of books and by hands on.And I have raise alot of kids over the years so just use some common sense and ask questions some you take some you leave. its all in the process of learning this WONDERFULL breed I have found very help full is making a journal When I ask a question I write it down in my book and then I write down what others have to say then I have something to fall back on good luck Susan

Goldie was the same way. She was a horrible eater until I got Stogie. Now she eats just to prevent him from getting it.

I buy those freeze dried medallions from Natures Variety and sprikle it on their food. They really seem to like it. They are not crazy about the Kibble alone.

Stogie does have the same problem, if I feed him early one night, the next morning he will throw up bile from an empty stomach. Poor guy. Its has gotten a lot better. He has not thrown up in a while...knock on wood.

Good luck Missy and welcome to the forum!

Kodi is a picky eater, but is getting better and eating a little more. I brought home the raw patties one day and gave it to him for dinner. He looked at me like I had just grown another head. I didn't give him that again!
