Congratulated myself too soon!

Hi to my loyal support group here on the Hav forum....well, after 8 1/2 days, Barney peed in the kitchen today! Here I thought we were going to have smooth sailing...but I was wrong, so we start all over again! My hubby wants to know how to help him "get it"...and I try to explain that it is a partnership between Barney and me...but Tom thinks that just means that "I am the one being trained"! I must have missed B's signal...cause he has been right on for such a long time...maybe it won't take too much longer!

We have been watching some of Caesar Milan's TV shows and now Tom thinks Barney needs to know we are in control (alpha pack) and this is from a man who has more patience than Job!!!!

Wish me luck....and have a Merry Christmas! I'll keep you up to date on our progress in between the cooking, cleaning and celebrating here in MN (by the way, we had 2 inches of wet snow this afternoon - a first for us this year)

Marge

Thumbs up

Marge, you and Barney are doing great! Keep up the good work and the upbeat attitude. I find Ceasars shows and DVD's motivating and good general reminders. If Barney is like Cooper, you'll end up having to drag him in from playing in the snow. My Bichon hates to get wet, but Cooper loves it, go figure!
Merry Christmas,

Beverly

I agree! Yall are doing wonderful. One accident is nothing to bark at, hehe.
You are going to have times when that happens.

Great going!

Was this after the snow was on the ground? If so and it was a large puddle then he probably put it off until it was too late. Some of ours hate getting their feet wet. Others don't care.

If it was just a very little bit then it was a "mark" for some reason.

We think that Cesar is great and that the people in the house absolutely need to be pack leaders. Imagine what our house would be like with 3 intact males and 9 females if we were not pack leaders. Being a pack leader has nothing to do with being mean. They love you no less. Just respect you more.

Our dogs have a dog door, actually two of them, and outside the dogroom they have a 16x40 covered veranda which is attached to a small grass yard which can be closed and that yard has a gate into a larger yard. Sometimes when it's blowing rain though we still have to make arrangements for them to have somewhere to go in the house. Our older ones were trained before we started using litter so they have to have an area with paper or pads. The girls who grew up with litter prefer a box.

The adult males have to have a vertical surface so we tape a piddle pad on the wall in the dogroom with blue masking tape. Some of the vertical pad turns out horizontal on the pad on the floor under it. The blue masking tape releases off a painted wall without pulling any paint with it but still holds fine. We use this setup in hotel rooms too if we are at a show and there's no quick place to go outside. If we have an expen set up in the room it has marine vinyl upholstery fabric under it and a vertical pad or two clipped to the expen. We buy pads in the adult incontinence section (amazing what you learn to shop for)in the pharmacy part of Sam's. They're larger, thicker, and cheaper than the ones sold for pets.

We have kept other Havanese who were trained to only be walked outside and to us, after being used to a dog yard and door, it's a real pain to get up early and get dressed to walk a dog versus just turning them out.
