Advise for new owner

We are about to get a Havanease. We decided on a boy and we got pictures from a breeder I I found on the internet. I also asked them to send me their previous puppies and I got all pictures in the email very shortly. What got my attention was that all the 8-10 week old cuties had good amount of tears. When I asked, I was told that this is a very common problem. I read good amount about the Havanease in general and about tearing. How would I found out if the problem is genetic? Also, is the tearing less visible on black faces? Otherwise the breeder will provide us with all the necessary papers, shots, check up and all what else need to be (Good question! What else?) and he gives us 5 years or longer health guarantee.
Can anyone please help us out and give us advice? I would not post the breeders name here but I would be happy to PM to anyone who can verify the breeders reference. Thank you so much!

Tearing is an issue on light dogs - but can be controlled...mine both have balck faces as I know I am way to lazy to deal with the tearing and you don't see it on the balck - one of mine tears alot - the other doean't but it doesn't matter on black...
Please see ALL the threads on puppies and what you should expect from a breeder - there are PLENTY! Make sure the testing is being done - Welcome to the wonderful world of Havanese!

I have three and one gets the tear stains and the other two don't..I got them from three different breeders...so it could be genetic...

Like Catherine, mine is black so it doesn't matter. However, she doesn't seem to tear much at all. She is almost 14 wks. old so, hopefully this continues.

I have a balck and white parti female....she does have some staining but I do not see it because she has black around her eyes...her muzzle is white and it does stain some....but I love her no matter what!!!!! I would make sure they do all the health testings on there sires and dams and ask for there numbers to verify it on the offa website!!! I am sure if looked you will have all the right questions to ask from here!!!! Where are you located?? That would help to know if I am able to know the breeder you are looking into!!! Keep us posted on how things come out for you...oh and welcome to the forum!!!!!!!!

Yes, it is pretty common, but more extreme on some dogs than others and not evident at all on others. The tear stains don't show on dogs with black under the eyes, but you will still see wetness.

If you are willing to work on it, you can get it taken care of through your veterinarian (if it is caused by blocked ducts) and by keeping the area clean.

Two of mine have black around their eyes, so they just need to be cleaned but dont show any staining. My white girl used to have really bad staining. I tried Angel Eyes and it worked great, but is expensive, so now my guys get a Tbsp a day of yogurt in their meals and she is stain free.

Welcome!!!

Congratulations on getting a new Hav puppy! It's very exciting, and nerve-whracking. My Ricky is all black and his tears are easily removed when they dry out. I just lightly use my fingernail and it's all gone. No smell, no leaks, nothing. Sammy has a lighter black/gray around his eyes so you see the 'crud' more, but again, it's not really a stain, just something I pick off every time I groom them. That was one of the main reasons I didn't want a light, sable pup, though I'd likely not care about that anymore.

What you want to know is whether the pup's parents are health-tested. There are soooooo many threads here about what to look out for, but I can steer you to the "Ask a Breeder forum": http://www.havaneseforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=43 and you can click on the threads that interest you.

If you go here: http://www.havaneseforum.com/forums.php under "forums", you'll see the list of different forums we have here and you're best bet is to check out the "puppy area" for great info on bringing baby home.

Have you checked the HCA website for a list of their breeder referrals? http://www.havanese.org/ Then, there's the OFA site where you can see if the pup's parents are listed. http://offa.org/index.html

Hope that helps you get off on the right track!

Benji is black and he doesn't really tear much. I clean his eys with soaked cotton ball. He doesn't smell at all.

Enjoy your furbaby!

Best, Poornima
