The Mystery Of "The Tail"

We went away for the weekend and left our 26 y.o. son to dogsit in our absence. He took this job VERY seriously, calling me several times with things like, "Baxter didn't eat breakfast. What should I do?" and "Tess threw up. What should I do?" and various other things. He loves the dogs and knows how particular I am about them, and really wanted to do a good job. Well, we get home last evening and immediately take the dogs for a walk. We got about half a block down the street and my husband had Baxter, who was walking on an extension leash in front of me. I shrieked, "What happened to Baxter's tail????"

As you can see from the photo, something BIG happened to Baxter's tail! I looks like half of it was cut right off. I found my son right away and quizzed him at length. He was floored and said not another soul had been in the house all weekend. The dogs were supervised each time they were in the yard. We've racked our brains since, trying to come up with various scenerios. Nothing seems plausible. As you can imagine, Baxter has a "completely" trimmed tail, now. I said he will probably like it because he won't be catching so many sticks on our walks! I pretty much had a meltdown to begin with, though. Repeat after me, "It's only hair. It's only hair!"

YIKES oh Alanna, What a shock! I'm sooooo sorry, he had a beautiful tail. That is totally weird! It really does look cut but maybe it got caught on something? Maybe you could get him a hair extension (haha). Nothing much to say to help but of course he is fine and not sick and we will all be interested to see how long it takes to grow out! I'm sure Atticus will love him just as much! Hope to see you both soon.

That is really weird. Could he have chewed it from being anxious? It does look like it because it's too clean of a cut for that but until he talks you will never know.

Wow! Hair grows. It does look like it is too long anyway, not to start an argument. Even it up, I have to keep cutting Jack's tail because it gets too long.

Hanna bit off a huge chunk of the end of her tail when she was a puppy. I can still tell the hair there isn't quite as long as the other areas. But that looks like a pretty clean cut...maybe the other dog?

I saw your post last night and was speechless. I bet you wish Baxter could talk to tell you what happened. It totally looks like it was cut. Did you son have any friends over? Gosh that is the strangest thing.

Ok....my latest hypothesis.....is it possible that before I went away for the weekend, as I was doing his last minute grooming...making sure that he was mat free for my son.....that "I" actually cut that much of his tail off without realizing what I did, with my mat cutter? I know it sounds crazy, but I'm getting to the age where strange things like this happen to me. It's the only plausible explanation I can come up with. I will be in a locked Alzheimer's unit, SOON!
