I feel so awful

I think I may have killed two little baby doves, unwittingly..(nice word for saying i"m a dumb*ss ) We have this mama Mourning dove that has nested on our bedroom window for 2 years, she lays her eggs in March, me and my dh always peek at her from the curtain really carefully and watch the progress, its pretty fascinating seeing a birds nest that close up... and the other day, I let Gucci peek at her and I think I scared her off and now her eggs have been unattended for over a day and it really makes me just ill and rotten, and kicking myself in the rear saying I should've known better. I really didn't want to scare mama dove, I know gucci would just look at it puzzling and tilt her head arghh... I just keep dwelling on it and its making me sad I"ll attach a few pics

Hopefully, someone will read this and not be as dumb as me and let their dog scare away Mamadove  I know there are people with much bigger problems ..but still feel awfully guilty. I keep telling myself that maybe the squirrel living in our attic scared her away and not me..(that's a whole other thread..)

It is only letting me upload one picture for some reason today so i will post the other one in another post

Oh no! Maybe something happened to Mama Dove. I wouldn't think that one peek by Gucci would scare her off after 2 years. Poor Mama and baby doves...

Oh no. I feel your pain as I, too, worry when things aren't right in the "wilds". My DH keeps telling me that it's nature. I sure hope Mama comes back, but being away from sitting on her eggs for over a day doesn't sound good. I wouldn't think that Gucci could have upset her that much, but who knows. I'm upset for you. Keep us posted.

I, too, wonder if something happened to mama dove. We have several birdhouses around and a couple of years ago there were babies in it. I could hear them chirping and I could see mama or daddy? going in and out of the opening. Then I noticed no adult birds were going in and out of the opening any more. I waited several months before I ever opened the birdhouse up and all the babies still in the nest dead and icky. I figured something had gotten mama bird. And then last year, I kept finding dead babies out on the grass - they didn't have feathers yet. I have no idea what happened to them - if another bird got in the nest or ?? We live along a slough and there are all sorts of ducks that nest along it. When the babies are still quite small, there are usually 8 or so, per mama, and then as they get a bit larger, you can see their numbers dwindle. It makes me so sad - it seems that the majority don't make it. I always get upset too when something happens to them. In your case, Kara, I wouldn't be as upset if it is just the eggs that are being left as I would be if it was babies being left. The doves in my yard have gotten so tame. They will fly in to bathe or drink from the birdbaths when I am just a few feet away. That surprised me.

Maybe she will come back tonight! Like others said, I doubt that Gucci peeking at them would scare her off for good.

Im pretty sure the eggs are dead, it is cold here today and I was reading online that mama will only leave them for 15-30 min unless daddy relieves her and sits on them.
My husband thinks another dove laid an egg in her nest. Last week, there was only one egg for a good week and then the 2'nd egg showed up a week later and he seems to think she flew the nest because some other mama squatted on it, idk..I kinda hope he's right and its not my fault
I know it probably seems silly that nature's rules apply to every species so differently and nature is not always so kind. Last year, they were like our pseudo-pets, we watched them hatch and then mama bring back worms and feed them to when she abandoned them so that they'd fly away, one stayed there alone for 2-3 days afraid to jump. And mama and daddy dove do this little dance with each other every morning on my back porch..I probably have a picture of that somewhere too

i dont' imagine a dove can lay an egg a week apart from the last egg? I'd have to go do some googling on it.

Its pretty amazing how clean doves keep their nests, there is not a speck of dirt or anything on there.

I guess i'm a little hormonal today, sigh.

I know how you feel. It stinks when you witness stuff like this. We have large sandhill cranes (that mate for life) and when you see their mate hit by a car and they stand there next to the dead bird-so sad!!

what's happening now? is mama dove back? can you keep the eggs warm somehow? I know absolutely nothing about this but it sounds so fascinating. I can feel your pain.
