Embarrassing - Won't clean self

This is a very embarrassing topic to bring up, but I would like some advice. I've tried to look into other threads, but saw no mention of our little problem . . .

Gracie won't clean herself after she pees. Her mother was wonderful about doing it for her. In fact, she still did it at 10 weeks (Or almost) the day we picked her up. So, I know its not from lack of having a wonderful mother. Her mother was wonderful!! I have tried to shave her a little down there (as much as you can a energetic puppy), but it is STILL getting her little fur wet. If I leave it on there, she won't clean it and it drys yucky and hard like. So, I wipe her down every single time she pees. It's getting kind of old. Is it wierd to try peanut butter down there? Sort of funny, but I'm not sure how to handle this. Or is this something she will just "grow" into? Does a dog naturally do this? Or how do you teach them to do it if they are not "picking" it up?

I would appreciate any advice.

Karen

I think poo eating is more embarassing... At least Gracie has kissable breath

I have always been told not to shave that area so that way it goes down the hair if that makes sense. Kind of like drainage

Some dogs are better at cleaning themselves then other's, similar to us humans. <grin> I haven't experienced this with my girls, in fact, I have one that really isn't the greatest at cleaning herself, but I haven't ever noticed it being an issue except when she is in heat. <grin>

Kathy,
First Kimberly has been so busy with Piaget and Hillary's championship, whatever she says... I think she isn't getting enough sleep ?

Lina and I are offering our service as puppy sitters. Do you plan on having a litter soon???

Karen, you may want to ask someone to help you trim her hair. None of my girls clean themselves, but they are all pretty clean peeers too. Is "peeer" a word?

Kathy, don't fall prey to their babysitting offers. That would be like asking Molly to babysit a nice raw piece of salmon. They both just disappear and all you'll ever see is a smile.

I have only boys so i am not too great about this . my friend Donna has a girl Tulip . I do not see her clean herself every time after she pees but she does seem to clean herself at least once a day as she never seems to smell of urine ..
She is still young - give her time ..
Cosmo was not a great tail wagger - he has just now started to wag his tail so that it is noticeable .
Yes i think pee-er is a word ..

Karen,
My girls don't clean themselves after peeing and I haven't noticed any problems unless they happen to have a mat in that area. You could probably trim the hair there without cutting too much of it off. I understand that it acts like wick for the urine sort of. I had to cut all of Sedona's hair there once due to a mat and never noticed any difference in the way she did her business.

Karen,

I'm sorry I can't offer any advice.....but I just had to tell you how much I LOVE your avatar! What a cutie, almost makes up for her "dirty little secret".

And after you've been here a while you'll learn that there's no such thing as an embarrassing topic!

Umm.. Peanut butter is not a bad idea! lol

Oh..and I would leave a little hair around there so it will "stream down it" and won't splatter all over the place, know what I mean? If you cut the hair too much right there...it makes it worse actually..But leaving some to guide to pee straight down.

Well, I don't really remember if Gucci cleaned herself much when she was a puppy. I was a new furmom, and it didn't even cross my mind. But NOW, actually...I'd say since she was around 5-6 months, she's REALLY good with cleaning herself. If I am rubbing her belly and even 'LOOK' at it..she quickly goes to clean it! LOL,

I just rolled her over and looked at her peeper and she started cleaning!!! She's just like "okay..mom...sheesh!"

So, my guess would be..it is something they just grow into. Like our human children that don't remember to brush their teeth until they are 15 or so, or take a daily shower. Sorta like that video I posted yesterday for "moms". LOL

Gucci is cleaning herself...AGAIN.

So, maybe you can just encourage it, I'd try the peanut butter and pointing at the peeper. Gracie will get better about it. And if you really try to help keep her clean as a puppy, I think they 'stay' like that. If Gucci gets a stick in her fur and can't get it out..she'll start whining or act frustrated about it, so I need to help her occasionally (especially if there are MANY sticks in her fur) and she always is grateful. I'd say she's very clean, but I don't recal her being like this when she was uber little.
