Megan, you could use the expen. I've done that and it works well, but I know one person who wanted something a little more festive looking so they bought short, white picket fence panels and put them around the tree.

We just had no ornaments about 3 feet down. Looked kind of funny but we had to manage Dora. And also NO CANDY CANES! My little girl apparently has a sweet tooth and would climb higher in the tree for them!

Cute idea, Susan.

I am really worried about Gucci 'opening' the presents. I need to dig out the bitter apple spray, lol...

Has anybody tried to just spray the bottom parts of the tree with bitter apple? That's what I was thinking of doing...

Susan that is a good idea!!!! I thought that I would maybe drape something over the expen and then hang up the stockings from there....with nothing in them of course!!!

I had a bottle of bitter apple in my grooming supplies. I only had to use it on the molding for Dora so it was pretty full. It leaked and almost 2 years later, I am not putting stuff in my mouth and can still taste it! So I wouldn't want you to put it on my presents :P

Susan~ That's exactly what my DH suggested. He's having a difficult time envisioning a tree w/an ex-pen around it. However, we also have an 18 mo. old grandson who needs to be kept away from the tree, too, and I'm not so sure a short, white picket fence would work for him.

Last year cosmo was just 6 months old and I did not have a tree .. After what i went through with losing asta and then Cosmo getting sick at Thanksgiving I just did noot want to take a chance .. It did not matter that much to to my husband and it was not our year to have Christmas ..
I put up a lot of decorations out on a long buffet which was too high for him .. I had two mini trees and then went and enjoyed my brothers tree..
I realize this is not an option for you with large families expecting Santa ..
Asta did fine with a Christmas tree - so do not ask me why he just seemed to understand it was not to touch .. We did remove the ormnaments from lower branches just in case ..
Griffin too - the first year was a bit of a hassle as he was a puppy but we took turns watching him .. After that he took it all in stride .. He was an old soul and he just loved a good time with his family ..
