Is Our Dog a Havanese?

Hi everybody!

About seven years ago, we took in our Farley off the street. We had seen him wandering around our neighborhood for a while and finally lured him in with food after several weeks of trying. Since then he has become a wonderful pet and much loved part of our family. We were never able to identify his breed and always assumed that he was just a super mutt. We had DNA testing done in 2006, when the breed databases were still very small and they could not identify any primary or secondary breeds, which reinforced our belief in his mutt-ness.

I recently posted his pictures on another internet forum and someone suggested that he may be Havanese. After doing a little bit of research, I am pretty firmly convinced that this is the case, but am looking for more informed opinions while we wait for further DNA testing. This is what he looked like when we found him in 2006:

In addition to the white on his chin and chest, he also has some on the tips of his back feet.

Since then, we have kept him trimmed because we live in Florida and assumed all that fur would be too hot for him - but if He's a Havanese I know that's not the case! This is what he looked like two years ago, trimmed. He's a little slimmer now.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My guess is no, although he could be a mix. I thought maybe in the first pic, but the profile looks less confincing. But really, you rescued him and he's a super pet and you're super lucky to have him and vice versa! He's super cute whatever he is. You should try the DNA test again and see what they come up with this time!

Does he "hop" when he runs, or does he have a full stride? Havanese typically have longer back legs than the front, and their gate when they run would remind you of a bunny.

How big is he? He seems bigger than a Havanese to me, but it just may be that my sense of scale is off. He's very cute though!

With all the hair, he looks it. Shaved - not so much. But you said he was a little roly-poly then, that could throw off proportions.

The best that you can say is that he is 100% loved.

possible Hav

The hair and markings sure look like a hav (same coloring as Lucky's sister Candy) but (and it may be the angle of the camera) his nose somehow looks larger to me and in his short cut, I can't see the longer back legs but the tail seems possible. Very very cute dog no matter what you call it. How much does he weigh?

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your replies!

In response to some questions:

Farley has been on the heavier side for most of the time we've had him, except when we found him and he was very skinny from combination of youth and stray life. He was at his heaviest in the third picture, overweight and put on a diet. He currently weighs about 22 pounds. Still on the heavier side, but a little lighter than in that pic. We had a Pug who weighed 22 pounds for most of his life, too.

He's pretty short and his legs are *very* short. I would say that he's between 10 and 11 inches at the withers.

How he runs: he absolutely has the bouncy gait one poster describes.

His temperament: Farley is the most laid back, submissive dog i've ever encountered. He's low energy except when he's not, if that makes any sense - he's very active and likes to do 'dog' things...has an incredible sense of smell, rolls around in grass, poop, smelly things; he's extremely intelligent and perfectly behaved, no neuroses. Super easy to train. He's attached to us but is overall very independent. Our other dogs have always been 'velcro dogs' in constant need of attention, but when Farley wants attention he will ask for it. Most of the time he is content to lay on the floor and often even prefers it.

I will try to find some more pics of him to post later. Thanks a lot for your input guys!

Sounds like a Hav. Ours is 22 pounds too. But are the back legs longer than the a certain jaunty bounce to their walk. What a wonderful pet you've found and adorable as well.
