Smile Hi...I'm new here

Hello...I came across this website the other night & it seems like such a wonderful place to share stories, questions, concerns, etc.

We just added Amy to our family a week and a half ago. She's a four year old Havanese who is now a retired show dog. She is the sweetest little girl!! I had read a lot about the Havanese breed and knew that someday, we would have one. I didn't want to go through all the puppy training again, so when we found Amy, I knew she was the one for us!

I have two girls who are 9 & 4 years old. They love her, but she has bonded with me & isn't paying too much attention to them or my husband yet. She will let them pet her, but follows my EVERY step! (I'm not kidding!) She is an absolute joy to have around, so it doesn't bother me....I feel lucky that she loves me so much I wondered if anyone else who has adopted an older dog has had this happen? I just hope she bonds with the kids in time...

We live in Upstate NY & would love to meet another Havanese owner so that Amy can have a friend. She had many other dogs with her at her previous home & I think she really misses the companionship. She also misses her puppies who were with her before her big move to our home.

I'm really looking forward to meeting some new friends here!

-Jen

Welcome, Jen! How lucky to have gotten a retired show dog. I adopted Maddie when she was 8 months old, and she's been an absolute joy. Getting an older Hav makes things so much easier. The housebreaking is done or almost done, the chewing and biting stage is over, and you can see the personality already developed. Maddie had a short show career also, and the best thing about that is that she's so patient during grooming and bathing. Those show dogs really have to put up with alot of that! Post pics of Amy when you can!

Jen, welcome to the forum!

All of my Havs have been younger, so I haven't had quite the same experience you've had, but your story sounds very familiar. Amy will warm up to the others in time, but she probably sees you as her provider - food, affection, warmth, etc. In time, you may not be able to find her in the house and she'll be hanging out with one of your daughters in her room. One of my girls does that - she changes loyalty every few months between my daughter and I. She gets more dependent on my daughter when she lets the dog sleep in her bed and feeds her and lets her outside. When I'm the one doing it more, she starts hanging out with me more often.

Looking forward to hearing more about you and your adventures with Amy!

Hi, Jen and welcome to the forum. You have certainly come to the right place. If you read the thread called "Tessa is Sick", I think it is similar to what you are experiencing with your new pup.

She will warm up to everyone, but in her own time. You can't expect it to be overnight (or even 10 days). It may take a little while. They do tend to bond with one person at the beginning, but will soon love everyone.

And, if you haven't figured it out already, we all need to see pictures of the dogs. We have this disease called MHS (multiple havanese syndrome) and need pictures to help us. Plus we're all a little nuts (about our dogs), which you will soon find out.

We have a few people here from upstate. Where are you? I am on Long Island.

Hi Jan and to the forum! I think most Havs are like that... even the younger ones. Kubrick certainly was when we first got him! Give Amy some time to warm up to the other members of your family. If you can, it's also good if they can give her treats and feed her so that she associates them with good things too!
