We got Dusty when she was 7 months. I had some concerns about getting an older puppy, but for us, the advantages outweighed the disadvantages. She was already housetrained, crate-trained, and otherwise off to a good start.
We also went to the breeder and spent about two hours meeting her and Dusty and her other dogs, watching how our kids interacted with them, etc, and then went home and thought about it some more before we decided to take her. She bonded with me right away, ran from my husband for the first several days, did okay with my girls, and wouldn't let my son touch her at first (smart of her though-we got an older puppy partly because he's five). We've had her almost two months now and she loves everyone. Bonding just took more than a day or two!
I'd also suggest spending some time with this dog and really thinking about whether you are willing to put in the time to deal with the challenges he presents, or whether some more patience looking for a different dog would be a better idea. We spent months researching and thinking on the idea of getting a dog before we started looking, and then were willing to wait till we found the right dog. Chocolates are out there! Dusty is a chocolate sable. We weren't looking for any particular color, but we were sort of hoping for a sable. We love her looks! You'll find the one for you eventually!
