Why are they toy dogs?

Why are Havanese considered toy dogs? They seem to me too big to fit with those little tea-cup sized dogs. All Gryff's clothes are medium sized -- and he's only 6 months old.

Toy dogs refer to all dogs that are bred as companions/lap dogs as well as due to their size (Havanese are small dogs, even if they are not as small as, say, a papillon). From what I understand there is some argument as to how the AKC chooses toy dogs, but those are the two defining characteristics: Temperament (bred for companionship as pets - not for working) and size (I might be wrong, but I think none of them exceed 15-20" in height?).

I'm sure one of the breeders here can answer your question better, but that's what I found when I was researching toy breeds.

Ivy,
It is interesting that you are referring "toy" dogs to "teacup" dogs.Remember-people are breeding those sickly little toys to make those tea-cups!The smallest is still the chihuahua---anything smaller then that is because of people "messing and screwing up" other breeds.Just my 2 cents---

Dora and I talked about this and she feels she is in the wrong group too. She fits in way better in the working group!

From what I've read, the Havanese were typically smaller dogs, 11-13lbs max. It seems that in the last 5yrs or so, they are being bred to be larger. I did talk to one breeder here in Canada who mentioned that he's finding that many Havs in the U.S. are being bred to be larger.

Bogart is 1.5yrs old and is 15.4lbs and a number of breeders who have seen him thought he was on the large size for a Havanese.

toy breed

I am not certain of this but I believe that the havanese originally applied to be in another group and was rejected. Someone told me that so it may not be true...just rumor..maybe someone on this site knows for sure.

Lina, excellent response!

Daniel, where did you hear that Havanese were typically smaller dogs?

Doesn't the AKC standard for Havanese say:

Height: 8 1/2-11 1/2
Weight: 7-13 lbs?

The applying to a different Group and getting turned down is not true. The Parent Club was very involved with the decision. Almost no one wanted to be in the Nonsporting group but there were a number of people who thought that the Toy Group would do more harm than good. I was one of those people. I said that in 10 years we would have dogs that looked like Poms with color. Not quite 10 years later but I was at a show outside the Hav ring this past summer and a bypasser asked me, "Is that some sort of Pomeranian cross?" referring to a dog on the table.

It's no question that a large percentage of Toy Judges prefer a toyish dog regardless of what the Standard says.

The AKC standard does not list weight. There is no weight requirement, only height.

And thanks Kimberly! Coming from you that is a compliment indeed!
