Gearing up for my Annual Cross-Province Road Trip

I'm starting to gear up for the long drive down to see my parents. I like to go, but I really don't like driving and it is a plus 13 hour drive. I think I make it in around 15 with stops for breaks. Brody isn't the greatest traveler either. While, he no longer gets car sick unless we're on gravel roads for an extended amount of time, he can get whiney or barky. I learned last year that he apparently doesn't like driving in the dark and he cried LOUDLY until the sun came up and then promptly went to sleep (after fraying my nerves with his crying while I"m trying to navigate through territory that was literally crawling with wildlife).

This year I'm leaving earlier in the season (last year I didn't go until September) and the sun comes up at 4:15 and doesn't set until nearly 10 PM right now, so there shouldn't be any driving in the dark and hopefully Brody will be better behaved.

I'm a bit excited for this trip. My mom and dad acquired a new dog a little younger than Brody - someone needed to rehome him. Jordie is a maltese/yorkie mix and from what my dad tells me really enjoys playing with other dogs. Their old dog (now passed) just hated Brody so I'm really hoping for 2 weeks of playtime fun for Brody.

It should be interesting...mom and dad will also be moving while I'm there which sucks because moving is one of my least favourite things to do.

Anyhow, tonight I went through the car wash on my way home from work. Brody just LOVED it! He especially liked the rainbow foam stuff because it smells fruity. His little nose was just going like crazy!

Good luck with the trip! My DH and I just got back from 2 weeks in BC & AB -- what beautiful country!! The Canadian Rockies are breathlessly beautiful. Now we've taken a tour -- and we both know where we liked to visit again (DH loved the cities of Vancouver and Victoria, and I loved the Jasper Park Lodge). Maybe we'll have to take separate trips next time.

I went through Jasper Park for the first time in the summer of 2011. Been through BC and Alberta loads of times, I just had never been through that route. I have to say that I thought Jasper was beautiful as well. There are loads of really beautiful spots in BC and Alberta. We're lucky that way.

I'll be bringing a HUGE bag of treats that Brody won't touch that hopefully Jordie will like. I even bought a bully stick for Brody hoping he'd like it so I could give him one to keep him busy and happy during the drive, but he won't touch it. He's so weird - won't touch Himalayan chews or Bully sticks. He's not picky about his kibble, but darn he is about his treats.

We're leaving tomorrow early (before 5am is the plan...hoping for around 4:30). I sure hope he doesn't spend the first couple of hours crying, whining and fussing like he did last year.

Good luck, Tracy, with your long road trip. I hope Brody is quiet for you. Tyler does a lot of whining in the car as he has gotten older and, I know, it can be annoying and distracting. Let us know how it goes.
