Havs across the U.S.

My first impression, looking at the locations of posters, is that this forum is NE-centric. I have heard that the breed has increased rapidly in popularity in NYC. Are there stats on popularity that support that impression of regional prevalence?

My personal experience, here in Minnesota, is that when I walked my hav when he was young and folks would ask about him, it was rare that someone had heard of the breed. Last year, maybe one in three would have heard of the breed and knew someone who had one.

Maybe it's the Barbara Walter's effect!

My experience with Whimsy is.....nobody knows what she is and when I tell them they have never heard of the breed. I then go on to tell them they originated in Cuba and that they are wonderful companion dogs etc.

My experience in Northern NJ is mixed - some have heard of the breed and will often know of other Havanese while others have never heard of it and I give them the Cuban roots explanation.

So far I have not run into anyone that has heard of Havanese dogs in SoCal and now central Cal.

Seems like there are quite a few Havanese in DC but people still don't know what they are.

I'd say it's about half and half with people knowing about Havanese around here in the Philly burbs. I was at the pet store a few day ago when someone came up and asked if he was a Havanese. Turns out this person also had a Havanese who at full size only weighed 6 pounds, huh? She commented on how big Timmy was, and he is, but 6 pounds is really small.

I'm starting to see a shift in more people either identifying Sonic and Aries as Havanese or knowing what they are when I say Havanese here in southwestern PA. I also know of at least 5 other Havs besides my two that go to the same daycare or groomer as we do.

People have guessed Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso or Maltese mix. I tell them she's a Havanese and some people think I am asking if THEY have a dog..., then I have to explain, no, she's a Havanese, that's the name of the breed. I have come across some people that knew but I think that was in CT.
