Measuring your dog for clothes

I can't seem to get a good measurement for Gryff. I am trying to measure the length of his back, but since it curves I don't know if I'm supposed to follow the curve or keep a ruler straight. I'm coming up with 13" which seems too big.

Help, I'm stupid!

Do you have a soft/flexible tape measure? 13 doesnt' sound too big, actually, from the neck to tail? That's about right. Usually, they list measurements of the Neck, back (neck to tail) and then width, which is the chest area, about 4 inches down from the neck or so)

Usually, I order clothes to fit her length, and if I need to take them in, I will...but if I didn't sew..I'd probably try to get closer to the chest and neck measurements.

*If you don't have a flexible measuring tape. USE an old shoestring and mark it with a pen and then put that against the ruler or yardstick.

I have a flexible ruler I use. I thought 13" sounded too big and I must be doing something wrong. I wish I could sew.

Although I have measured and re-measured, I have had hits and misses on ordering clothes...some fit, some don't.

From my experience sizes can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer..just like in womens clothes..

I think Scudder is 13 inches from neck to tail. Fred is less, so that sounds about right.

I have the same experience as Diane and Kara. Bella is so thin, so I buy smalls and have to take the clothes in, but the length is perfect. The difference is, I use big safety pins, because I can't sew! I buy small for the boys and they usually fit great, but the sizes are not consistent. I have some smalls that are too large on my boys, some that are snug, and some that fit perfectly!
