Giant Bee!

So, this morning Brody and I head out to the car as usual. I stop to put a couple of things in the trunk and when I close the trunk I find Brody has gone UNDER the car. He never does this, so this is a bit weird.

I walk around to the front of the car to put some stuff in the passenger seat. Brody is trying to jump in the car. He sits in the backseat, not the front, so I'm saying, "what are you doing?".

I go to put him in the back seat and he's practically flinging himself at the car.

I'm thinking, "Gee, he's really excited to go this morning!"

I put him in his car seat and he's rolling around in it and not sitting still. Normally he stands with his paws up on the edge of it so I can put his car harness on him.

I get the harness over his head and start moving the chest plate part around to his chest and I feel this giant buzzing mass in my hand. I pull it away and it's a giant bee!

I mean, I *THINK* it was a bee. It was so darn huge I have trouble believing it was really a bee. This thing was about half the size of my palm. It was striped black and white/yellow and just fuzzy like crazy. It was buzzing and vibrating.

I screamed and flung it away! Normally I like to think I'm not a sissy screaming, but I definitely shrieked!! I didn't get bit/stung, thankfully. I've never been stung before but there is a strong chance I'm allergic.

Anyhow, Brody seems fine. I checked him over and couldn't find anything else on him and it didn't appear that he had been bit/stung, but I'll keep an eye on him just in case. This is where it is nice that he is here at work with me so I can keep an eye on him. He's acting normal though.

So, this was my big morning scare!

We have giant bees around our apartment complex and I have recently found out they are called "wood bees." They are huge black and yellow bees that hang out in one of my neighbor's front porch area. My research on them says they are not usually agressive unless they feel threatened. I can't imagine what poor Brody must have been feeling to know this was on him. I am glad to hear he is ok. I would still be screaming. I am such a wus!

Yikes...I have been stung several times in the garden over the years...but not by something quite that large. It hurts. I have children's benedryl on hand in case Whimsy gets stung while we are out in the yard.
Nice way to start the day huh??

I felt so bad not recognizing that he was in distress. I seriously just thought he was just super excited to be heading out to work this morning!

Sounds like a Japanese Hornet. They're pretty scary looking, but you would have heard a yelp if he'd been stung. I've seen a bunch of them, but never known anything to get stung by one.
