Zoey ran off !

I got home from work last night at 9:30. I can usually hear Zoe barking at the door because she knows my car. I went inside and I could only find Maddie. I started panicking that I would find her sick or something. I have a friend who comes and lets them out while I'm gone. I called him but he didn't answer. I then noticed I had missed a call at about 8:00 and my neighbor said they had gotten home at that time and found both dogs in the front yard and my front door was wide open. They were able to get Maddie back in the house but Zoey backed off from them and ran. The more they tried the farther away she was getting. By the time I got home they had started looking with their cars and told me the last place they saw her. I live in a city type neighborhood with lots of houses and streets every block. Two other people had spotted her and I felt i was going in the wrong direction. I finally got ahold of Bob and he said I'll be right over. He called and asked where I was and to tell you the truth I was so upset I was lost. We spent two hours calling and had a few other nice people looking. The problem I felt was unless it was myself or Bob she probably wouldn't approach a stranger. I told everyone if they did see her to just sit and call her name not to go forward. I called my sister who Zoey trusts and she was on her way to help.
The thoughts that were going threw my head weren't good. I was screaming her name and crying at the same time. I couldn't even see . I had left my front door open just incase she came back so I went home but she wasn't their. I had found Bob and he and I split up and started off a different direction. Another hour and still no Zoey. I kept thinking of the rescue Havanese lost in the woods for such a long time. I came back to check the house again and met up with mys sister when Zoey came around the corner. A woman sort of herded her in my homes direction.
I really thought I had lost her. She didn't have a collar on and she isn't microchipped. Let alone street smart as far as cars . I'm still traumatised. The woman who herded her only lives around the corner. ( I think Zoey would have come around the corner herself ) The last sighting was about 8 blocks away. I'm amazed she found her way back especially in the dark. Bob had left the house at 5 so I have no idea how long they were out on the front lawn.
The poor girl got into some burs and was covered from head to toe with them about an inch thick. Her eyes were covered with hair stuck with the burs I couldn't even see them. It took me about three hours to comb them all out. Oh my god I'm so happy she found her way back home. Bob swears he closed the door tight and thinks someone noticed my hide a key. I would rather think he just didn't get it closed tight. I am going to get my locks changed just incase it was an intruder .

OMG!!! What an awful thing for a pet owner to go through. I just can't imagine how you must have felt looking for her!! Those burrs look horrible! I feel so bad for what you and Zoey went thro. Glad everything turned out ok!! Might want to think about getting a micro-chip.

Glad you got Zoey back. It sounds like you have very nice neighbours to have so many actively searching for your pet!

Oh, Suzi, thank God everything turned out okay. I had to jump to the end of the story, too! Get them both microchipped!! And, leave their tags on them until you do!! That's a real heart-stopper to go through!!

I certainly wish I had been smart enough to start at the end of the thread and read backward!!! I was in tears, thinking Zoey was out there and lost! OH Suzi, I am so sorry you had to go through that! OMG, her hair - what a mess. But at least you have that mess in your hands! What a nightmare, not knowing where she was or how long she had been out. I too am surprised Maddie was still there.
