Friends AT LAST!

I'm so pleased I could just pop and had to share! Ollie and my chihuahua, Ruby have started PLAYING! Little rounds of RLH and a little wrestling too! I was afraid it would never happen, it's been six weeks since Ollie came home and Ruby has given him nothing but the cold shoulder and even little nips when he got too close. I left them alone hoping they would work it out and FINALLY they have! Today is the third day in a row they have spent time playing.

I tried and tried to get pictures this morning, but they are just moving too fast....I'll keep trying!

Shelly,
I know exactly how you feel. Just give it a year and they will be sleeping all snuggled against each other and you will know you made the right choice!

It is sooo fun to watch them Maryam! It makes my heart giggle.

I so hope you're right, Amanda...that's what I was hoping for when I got him. I've been so dissappointed that they didn't hit it off. I would be just thrilled if they would cuddle. For now, though, I'm just going to rejoice that they are having a good time playing.

Shelly, that's great. It makes sense that it would take time for Ruby to warm up to Ollie, though, as she was used to being your only baby. Now she needs to share you. 6 weeks isn't too long and Ruby's probably realizing that this little puppy monster isn't TOO bad. He will PLAY with her!

That's great news. Good friendships take time. I can't wait to see photos of them playing together.

Lina, Ruby is spoiled rotten, but she wasn't my only baby for very long. My yorkie, Tucker, just died on 9/11 so she only had about a month of being a spoiled only child. I sort of rushed to get Ollie, because Ruby is 2 and still has just a bit of playful puppy in her. I was afraid if I waited too long, she WOULD get used to being the only baby and also she would be completely grown out of the playful stage. I was really beginning to doubt the soundness of that thinking. I'm so excited that I wasn't wrong!

It was really a difficult time to take on a new puppy with our temporary move to California, hubby's new job and all. Especially since he has turned out to have allergies and we've had to make so many trips to the vet. It had started to get me down, but seeing them play together these past few days makes it all worth while! We have an appointment on Jan 2 with the doggy dermatologist and I just got a new book on allergy solutions for dogs so hopefully, we can get this itching thing under control too. One hurdle at a time, right?

I'll keep trying to get photos, Susan!

Shelly,

That's WONDERFUL news! I love hearing stories like this because I worry about adding #2 to the spoiled lil' singleton I have. She is really unpredictable with dogs, she's pretty good with other Havs, but can be a real SNOT around other dogs, esp. certain other breeds. lol, My husband says she would go into a depression if I got another dog, and I sometimes wonder if he's right! So..I'm happy to hear they are warming up to each other!

Also, bummer to hear you are still struggling with the allergy/skin issues! I hope your vet gets that resolved quickly, or you figure out what is causing it. It is amazing to me that allergies are becoming so prolific, even to animals. It really says something about what we've done to our food supply. Scary stuff.

Shelly, I am soooo happy for you!! As you know, I know from first hand experience the disappointment and then how things can turn around so quickly! I'm so glad you're seeing signs of that budding friendship! It's wonderful news and I know well the feeling of your heart giggling and singing! Congratulations!

Thanks, Kara,
I think Gucci would warm to a new friend just fine. It seems to me that havs are sort of predispositioned to like other dogs, but of course they are all different. Ruby and Tucker would pretend NOT to be friends, but if they thought I wasn't looking, they would play. They were much happier when we had to leave for trips too. Tucker was more than 10 years older than Ruby, though, so I think it's harder when the age difference is large. Still, I always feel better about having two dogs. This is the first time I've managed to have two even this close in age.

I am bummed about the allergy issues too. It upsets me to have him scratching all the time, I worry about him. Plus he has torn all his hair up anywhere his back legs can reach. The trainer this week commented that it looks like he is wearing a tutu because his hair is short on his upper back and chest and long on his behind! Actually he DOES look like he is wearing a tutu...poor little guy. My Amazon book on dog allergies just arrived an hour or so ago and I'm counting the days til his dermatologist appointment. If you think of it, send up a little prayer for him. I know it must be miserable to itch all the time and I feel bad about having to give him antihistimines too, especially since they only barely seem to take the edge off the itch.
