Thunderstorms

Just curious how other Havs act during thunderstorms. Bear hates them...but the funny part is that he insists on being on my bed during them...not under the bed...ON the bed.

What does your hav do during thunderstorms? Where do they hide out?

My first Hav used to bark incessantly with every clap of thunder, all the while looking at me as if he was warning me that there was something out there that shouldn't be. He never hid, however. OTOH, Tyler never reacted to the thunder only to the fact that Bailey was barking so much and wondering why. He is now mostly deaf, so no reaction at all

Whimsy hates thunder storms and just wants to be on my lap! If I am busy doing something she follows me so close that I am almost tripping over her. Poor thing pants like crazy too. If it is at night,( she sleeps with me) she will stick on me like glue when normally she doesn't do that.

Dionna is bad during thunderstorms. She will pant and pace around and will tremble. Recently I have been using Bach's pet remedy ahead of a storm if I know for certain one is coming. It helped in the last storm but the trick, at least for Dionna, is to use it prior to the storm. Once she is nervous, it does not work.

I wish there was some way to reassure her. She often wants to jump in my lap and I will allow this. A few times during a thunderstorm, she has had a potty accident (going pp off her potty pad) and I know it is because she is 'off' due to the storm.

I am very open to learning more about how to manage this.

Zoe, my JR/Corgi mix, had an intense thunderstorm fear reacting with sheer panic for several years. About 3 years ago we started using a combination of a Thundershirt and Rescue Remedy for her. The reduction in panic didn't happen immediately, however, over several months her reaction to storms calmed significantly. Now when we know that there is a good chance of thunderstorms we put on her Thundershirt and give her the Rescue Remedy and she might get a bit anxious but nothing like the tremendous fear that she use to have.

Kodi doesn't care about thunderstorms, but just last year he began to be afraid of fireworks. He's not terrible, but he wants to be IN bed with one of us, under the covers. From what I've read, thuderstorm/fireworks fears tend to develop most often after a dog is 3 years old. They can develop any time after that, but the most common onset is between 3 and 7 years. Not sure why. I HOPE Kodi doesn't get afraid of thunder... Fireworks are somewhat predictable, and always happen at night. Thunderstorms can happen almost any time here in N.E.

I'm not sure either, Tammy. (I bet Dave has a paper about it, though! ) I suppose maybe they need a few exposures to get nervous about it?
