More than one Hav

I tried doing a search on this subject but couldn't find anything, although I'm sure you've discussed this before --

If I happen to get another Hav., (already being Mom to Caz, a little boy,) would it be best to get a male or female?

I have a male and a female, because that was my choice. I have always had one of each sex and just went with that again when I got my Havs. I don't think it makes any difference. If the dog is the right temperment and personality, that is what matters.

Unless you were breeding

I've had girls and boys and all girls and it's made no difference. I agree it's more about temperament.

Suzy,

I have owned female dogs all of my life, as I was always worried about leg lifting thing. I heard that if you have them neutered at the right time that they won't lift their leg..but I have seen that this is not always true.

My first Hav was a female, but then I read a comment that someone wrote that said "Although my female Hav "LOVES" me, my male Hav is "IN LOVE" with me"..That swayed me to get a male (LOL!) Gabriel is 2 now and still squats and hasn't lifted his leg once to pee on any thing. As for the "love" vs "in love" thing..Gabe is more attached to me than Sophie (though I just adore her!)

I agree though with the previous posts..it is all about temperment.

I have three boys. But boys are just my preference. I don't see where it would really matter. I would say both would be just great. I will add, that none of my three mark and I have never owned a male dog that marked in the house. They will mark some outside, but my female lab, does this also.

I don't have 2 yet, but we are seriously thinking about a second Hav once Tessa is housetrained and knows the rules of the house.

I have to agree about temperament trumping gender. We too heard the "a female loves you but a male is IN love with you" and I say bunk on that! If my female were any more in love with me we'd be fused together! And you'll read here about males who are aloof in temperament.

I've read since then that if you neuter/spay your pets there is very little difference between the sexes. Although I do have friends who have neutered males who mark their territory.

I've also read that it's best to have one of each sex...less competitiveness. I do think that was true for my human kids and I guess we will find out if that is true for our Hav kids since we will probably get a male next time. Although I see many here who have 2 of the same sex with no problems and some with 2 of the same sex who are having problems.

I have a boy and a girl. Benji was my first one and it was all about the temperament and breeder selected just a perfect first Hav furbaby for us suitable for our lifestyle and expectations. The second time around again it was more to do with the temperament and how well they were suited for each other. Oncce again their breeder made a perfect choice. Benji and Lizzie are half siblings. I agree it's all about the temperament. Benji has more of an independent streak but very sweet and gentle disposition. Lizzie is more cuddly and spunky.

Best, Poornima

Well Bogart is 1.5yrs and I just recently got another male Havanese. Brando was 5 months old when I got him. I really debated about the male vs female thing but in the end realized temperment is more important. They get along really well. No issues whatsoever. From time to time I have to stop them from playing as it can get a little out of control, but not because they are trying to hurt each other. Bogart couldn't care less about sitting in my lap and being all affectionate, but Brando, oh boy where to start? He's soooo affectionate and loves to kiss. He's like my little shadow...who I've managed to step on a few times.
