1rst time leaving them both :(

We are going to meet DH's family this weekend in FL for an early Christmas. And although we have left Jasper (which we hated) this is the first time leaving them both behind. The person who walks the boys when we are both working is just too expensive for overnights ($90 a night for both-- yikes that's a whole other vacation) We found a new woman who is much more reasonable and the good thing is most of her clients are small dogs and she doesn't take in aggressive dogs-- Our boys spent a day at her house with her yorkie and Italian greyhound who were both very very sweet. But I am still nervous.

When we did leave Jasper in the past it was with a woman with a fairly aggressive sheltie mix who she couldn't control--- He would bark non stop at the door- the other dogs, even when the phone rang...She also took in a lot of big dogs. I was new to puppy parenting and didn't read the signs-- I thought Jasper was excited to go see his friend- but in reality he was stressed. On the way there he would start what I call the kennel whine... arr, arr, arrr errrr....very high pitched. It wasn't until I realized that it was the same whine on the way to the groomers that I realized he was stressed. Anyway- we think this Sheltie, taught Jasper his bad barking habit.

So I think this woman is better--- she has a lot of rules-- like we hand off the dogs at the door to make it easier on them and the other pooches-- And I could tell she was really good with them (we did get to see her house and yard) But it is in a not so great part of town-- and I am a nervous wreck. But we like to travel-- so we really need to have a place to leave them that isn't a kennel.

Oh thank you forum for letting me rant. (NOW a FL Disney resort with my in laws on my B-day is a whole other story...LOL)

I think I would be more stressed about the vacation with my in-laws.
We will send good vibes to the boys while you are away.

Can you call and check on them? It sounds like a good place to leave them. Brady stays at his breeders. While she is fantastic and great with Brady, I know it isn't easy on him. She has 12 havs of her own, a few other borders sometimes, and some puppies here and there. He is used to being top dog around here and he is definately the bottom of the pack there. While it is not perfect, it is the best place for him and I know he has fun while he is there. It is funny, when we pick him up, he is usually so busy with the other dogs it takes him a minute to notice we are there. I call often and email back and forth while we are away. It certainly sounds like this is a better environment than a kennel and I am sure they will be fine while you are gone. Try to relax and have a great vacation.

Missy,

It sounds like you have found a good place for Jasper and Cash to stay while you are gone, now the thing is to try not to worry too much.

I know just how you feel...I have to leave Casper and Missy next month. It is a business trip, signed up months ago....still have not bought the airline tickets. I don't really want to leave the dogs....and I can't find anyone to leave them with either.

Missy,

I know exactly how you feel, well....you are maybe more worried than me, probably since they will be in a new place, but if your instinct/gut feeling is telling you that she is knowledgeable about dogs and will take good care of them, then try not to worry too much! $90 a day??! Yikes! That's crazy.

I'm sure they will be in good hands and they will also have EACH other, and that gives them a sense of familiarity, ya know? I think having 2 makes it a little easier in situations like that vs. a singleton in a new place w/ new people, dogs and surroundings. I think they will help each other adjust and give comfort to each other.

Try to enjoy your trip! I'd be stressed more over Disney w/ my inlaws! lol

Lynn...too bad you and Missy aren't closer! I'd love to babysit!..ehh...Puppysit.

Try not to strangle your in laws (sometimes I have difficulty!) but maybe you could leave a calling card and ask her to give you an update? That might help with nerves if you get a message from her and can listen to it. I think her rule at the door will make sense with a lot of dogs- doggy day cares do that too. When your dog is attached to you, he is still guarding his property and more likely to fight with other dogs. Isabelle has a no lap rule when she is around other dogs cause she has to be queen of the mountain.

Have a great trip,
Amanda

P.S. As to the learning to bark, I have a good friend who is a Pom person but she got involved with sheltie rescue and has 4 shelties and one Pom. Her Pom herds you like crazy, barks insane, and doesn't know it is a sheltie. We all thought it was cute when he was little and still looked like a Pom. Now he has gotten taller than their standard. His coat is not round, etc. We all think he morphed into a sheltie (doesn't help he is sable either!)

LOL- a little Pom/sheltie wanna be. Yes we thought it was cute with Jasper at first too. Because we had never heard him bark before--- But now he has grown into his bark and takes his job very seriously and it is a bit annoying when he goes "red zone" as we say. (not dangerously red zone of course)

Missy, the doggy care home sounds really good. I hope you can enjoy your trip knowing they are in good hands. Have a great time in Florida! Hopefully it will be a little warmer. (We had our first freezing temps last night.)

Oh, and Happy early Birthday!
