Why do people let their dogs roam?

This has been bothering me all night. Yesterday we were on our way home from running errands when we saw what looked like a 5-6 month old Havanese standing by the road barking at a passerby. The pup was across the road from us, standing just off the asphalt and barking his little head off at a guy that was walking on our side of the street. The posted speed limit on this street is 55 mph! There are houses on one side (where the dog was) and mostly open desert on the other with a few businesses here and there.

We had a line of traffic behind us or we would have stopped long enough to find the owner and share our thoughts on letting a pet roam loose beside a busy road. I even thought about turning around and picking it up, but I've seen dogs run into traffic to get away from well-meaning strangers. I didn't want to cause an accident.

I can only hope the little guy or girl made it back into its yard unharmed.

Why do people do that? Let their pets roam loose like that? Granted, it's pretty rural out here, but that also means faster speed limits and more wildlife.

I had to get that off my chest. Thanks for letting me vent.

I am with you on that. Now I do realize sometimes they break loose but there are a bunch of people in my neighborhood that let them run loose. Drives me nuts. Houston and I had to change our walking path months ago after dealing with two boxers.

Yes. I feel your frustration. Even more than dogs are the people that live in the neighborhood that let their small children run (ie 4 years old) unsupervised. One time I had the neighbor's kids playing in my yard for over an hour. They never even realized they were gone.

People are nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Julie. You are too nice. I think the poop would mysteriously end up on their front porch so they step in it when they pick up their newspaper. LOL

I hope that pup is OK. I see this all the time and it breaks my heart.

One day, I saw a beagle running down my street and when I opened my car door, it jumped in. Luckily it had a tag on - Dept of Agriculture - so I figured it was a hunting dog. I called the # on it, but got no answer. Then I called my local PD to report I found a dog. I brought him home and thank goodness the owner got in touch with the PD and the owner came an got him.

They had been visiting and the dog got out. I guess he was lost. He was so cute and friendly. It's not always someone who is irresponsible. Sometimes accidents happen. But more often than not, it is just someone not doing their job of being a good pet owner.

That's really sad Maybe it was in an electric fence? But STILL..that's no guarantee, even then...people run off the road!

I am also annoyed with this! And I also have neighbors that let their dog come POOP and pee in my front yard! Gosh, that aggravates me SO bad, I don't even let Gucci go to potty out there! lol, I mean...why should I when there's the back/fenced yard?

Oh Catherine that's awful! I feel bad for your daughter's boyfriend, his poor pooch, and the GSD. We grew up around and had a GSD for many years. So sad.

Kara, our neighbor does the same thing! I've actually seen her walk one of her dogs down the street, watch it poo, and leave the poo where it lies. That is SO rude in my book. I spend too much time keeping our yard completely free of the waste from 10 dogs, I don't want to have to pick up the poop from dogs I don't own!

I'm pretty sure the little dog was standing near or in front of its own house. The front fencing of the two closest houses had their driveway gates wide open. There are SO many dogs out here that are allowed to roam free. Sadly, there's not a week goes by that I don't see at least one dead pet in the road around here, be it dog or cat.

If I see it again I know I'll be very tempted to try to catch it.
