never registered my pup..

I JUST realized that not only did I not ever do that whole AKC thing, I have no idea where the papers that were given to me are. Am I the only one?? Seeing as I wasn't going to breed him, or show him. I guess I never thought it was important. But, maybe it's something I should do?? (assuming I can find them somewhere).

He was most likely a puppy mill pup I mentioned on my intro that my sister got him for us. She really didn't think she was doing anything wrong by buying him from a petstore She knew I'd been researching them, and wanted one. But, that I wasn't in the situation to pay as much as the one breeder I found was charging. We'd gone another direction, when she showed up with Cooper. He was from this AWFUL pet store in MO. I saw awful, without ever seeing it..because afterwards, I researched it. Made me sick to think he came from there. But, what could I do?? There was no return policy. And not like I could after seeing that face, and watching my children ooh and ahh all over him.

I remember her handing me something, guess a pedigree or something? (sorry, I'm really clueless. All my dogs in the past were rescues). Then something came in the mail. Something about registering him, I think.
I didn't bother looking through everything.

So, just wondering. Are there perks or anything to registering them? A monthly newsletter or something, lol?

You'll get solicitations for insurance! LOL

If you do find the papers, I think it is good to register him, but I don't know that there are any real benefits to you except that you can track his pedigree too.

Assuming you find the papers, if you want to register him, just do it before he is a year old. After that, there are extra fees.

I registered Annabelle even when I knew I would never breed her, but I see no reason to register. There are no perks. As you are very wise to NOT breed why register? Our goal is to put all puppy mills out of existence. I would never go to a pet store or back yard breeder but those puppies once they are in the world need homes. I don't know the answer but Thank God your baby found its way to you via your sister. Ruthann and Annabelle

You know, as annoyed as I was when she told me where she got him. Then she told me she felt she rescued him. They had a row of about 15 cages behind glass. They'd put one or two pups in the cage for about 30 mins, then rotate them out with another couple. She said they must have had a back wherehouse FULL of dogs. Because she was there for 2 hours, and she can't count how many different dogs came out of there. She simply went in because she was looking at property near by. Saw this HUGE petstore, and remembered I'd asked her to stop and get some hay for our guniea pig. She had no idea anyone still sold puppies in stores.
She played with several over that time. Then saw Cooper being brought out. She said he was sooo tiny, and so cute..she asked what he was. They told her a Havanese..and that he was "on sale" I wanna say she paid $800..$900 for him? She set him on the counter, with the guinea pig food, and said "I'll take him", lol.
Before she left, though..she asked if they happen to have other havs. Because she'd never seen one before, she was now curious to see more. They said yes, then had to look through their computer log to find out where they were located UGH..that kills me. They brought out two small, dirty pupppies. They told her they weren't suppose to be brought up to the window that day, cause they hadn't been groomed. But, since she asked....

She said they looked horrible, and that confirmed she needed to get Cooper out of there.

He was a sweet, playful pup....for about a wk. Then he stopped doing anything at all. He'd just scratch and lick himself all day. He'd walk 4, 5 steps..fall to the ground, and scratch. I took him THREE times to the vet, because I knew something was wrong with him. He had NO quality of life, seriously. He was miserable, we were miserable. Finally..the vet scraped some of his skin and found out he had sarcoptic mange..ugh. Gave me treatment for him, and my other (that had begun to scratch) and within 3, 4 days..I had a lively, hyper, adorable puppy again. But, this lasted weeks. So we weren't ready, lol. I'd bragged on how he didn't chew anything (or anyone) and how he just laid around.

K, why I just wrote that novel? I have no clue, lol.

That's rough for your sister Tritia. So many people feel they are rescuing dogs when they buy them out of those situations, but what they may not realize is that they also just helped to ensure the puppy mill would be able to keep going. It is a really tough Catch-22.

ruthann, I would suggest registering if Tritia is interested in competing in things like Agility. You need to have at least limited registration for that, which is why Kubrick is getting registered even though he is neutered.

I totally agree!
Aside from meaning well, she's not all that bright, lol. Seriously..she just really didn't even know what a puppy mill was.
She knows now.

Hmm..that's good to know. We have (since being on here, and seeing how cool the whole agility thing is) been discussing putting him in an agility class. More for fun, though. I doubt we'll ever do any competing.
First we need to go through a basic obedience class with him. No matter how hard I try, he still thinks I'm saying "dance", when I say "sit"

The only solid benefit is to be able to compete with him in agility or some other activity AKC offers and work towards earnign a title. Oooh I htin that would be cool! I wanted Rufus registered even though he's "just a pet". ( but not to me-he's much much more! ) I might want to become involved in obedience or agility in the future and this keeps our options open. Also, I just LIKE having him registered. He has a certificate, he has a registered name that links him to his breeder's kennel and legitimizes his purebred line. That's just something special to me. I don't flaunt it to my friends, but it makes me feel nice. Having a registered name is just the same as giving my children middle names. It doesn't make any difference to anyone else but me--but I like it!
