Welcome home Lucky!!!!!

So we surprise the kids with Lucky today (early Xmas present). We brought Lucky home around 5:00 pm. On our way to the house Lucky, was so scared he would not stop shaking and on the car. The kids were so excited of course th girls just wanted to play with him but he was so scared and kept shaking and looked so sad. I guess is going to take sometime for him to get adjusted to his new family. I've put some food and water but he does not want to eat. All he wants to do is be in his crate. Is this normal? How long does it take for him to get adjusted to us? I keep checking on him every 10 minutes to make sure he's ok.

Oh Denise - I am so glad you guys made it home. the is pretty normal for the ride home. And he is away from his pack, so he is scared. You and your family are his new pack now. I would have the kids just sit nicely next to the crate with the door open, let him come & go from it. Eventually his puppy curiosity will get him to come "visit" The kids just need to be sure to not make quick movement or be real loud. He will adjuster. Honestly, lots of cuddling the first few days is what did it for my guys. I barely put the pups down, and they bonded to me very quickly. Mine too didnt eat till the next day or so. Just leave it out for him and he will eat when he feels more comfortable. Good luck, it will be a long night, I wont kid you, he will cry a lot, unless you have him in your room or in your bed with you. We would love to see pics as soon as you have them!!

Welcome home Lucky! How old are your children? I agreaa about greeting Lucky with calm children. Perhaps they can sit by the crate and hold peices of his kibble in their hand to see if he takes it. Remember this is a major adjustment for your dog.

Poor little guy is probably just a little overwhelmed. Can you coax him out yourself with a treat? Maybe let him have a day or two to get used to his surroundings but this is probably why a lot of breeders don't want puppies going home on Christmas Day! Look how overwhelmed they can get on a normal day!

Denise,
Make sure the children remain calm. He has been taken away from what he knows and possibly hasn't been around small children. How old is Lucky? Remember too that children need to learn how to treat a puppy so the puppy will treat them the same way. It is very much like you brought a new human baby home from the hospital. Hold him and make him feel secure. Continue to offer the same food the breeder used and make sure he has access to plenty of water. A great video and book I suggest all my buyers get is "HOW TO TRAIN A PUPPY YOU CAN LIFE WITH" The video is great for children. You can purchase both at www.dogwise.com
