A second hav- what to look for?

I have a question to ask everyone- I am having MHS, and am in the process of looking for a puppy. But my question is how do I determine what type of personality is a best match for my hav Parker? Parker is loving and sweet with the family, but is extremely shy with anyone and everyone else- it takes him forever to warm up to anyone who comes into the house- if he does at all. We have a caretaker 24/7 in our house for my mom, and after 1 month, he stil won't go up to her- he has gotten closer, but won't let her get too close. When he is near other dogs, he will at first bark and pull on the leash to get closer- but is definitly shy when he gets near to them.
Parker loves to cuddle, but usually when it is his idea. He is both a velcro dog, and independent. I sometimes have to remind him that he was supposed to be my lap dog and to just sit with me while I scratch him. Then, he will get comfortable and enjoy the attention.
So, what personality would I look for in the next hav?

I have always been told you want a dog calmer than your first. That is exactly what I did and it worked! Caeser has a few shows on how to pick to match your dog to a new buddy. Maybe you can catch one!

Thinking of adding a Neezer, check out this thread!

Lynn,

Have you ever had Parker in a play group situation where he can run free and interact with other dogs?? Sometimes a shy dog will open up when he is around other playful dogs..

I began dog sitting for a friend's Yorkie about a year ago and he would never play with my other two Hav's..he would just sit and watch from a distance. Then when day he suddenly opened up and started to play..It really surprised me!

Lynn,
The way a dog reacts to humans vs another dog, can be completely different. Have you taken him to any socialization classes? What about a play date with other Havs in your area? I am not sure I have an answer for you either, but I would first see how he is around other dogs his size or smaller. With Havanese, I have found it really doesn't seem to matter, they all seem to get along well. When we had our club play date that Susan and her DH provided the fenced pen, we had I would say 15 different Havanese, all running and playing together without any issues. It was great.

I agree with the others! I wonder if your perception of his personility is his perception. Some dogs are meant to be solo dogs, but i would want him to be interested in another dog so he doesn't feel replaced. I am not a dog expert, but I would want a dog to be interested in having a mate.

Lynn U,

When I got my second Havanese dog, I looked for an experienced breeder and told them what Casper was like and asked her to help me pick out a puppy that would get along with him. Casper has always been high energy so a low energy dog would never have worked.

I think Missy is a prefect match for Casper, she can keep up with him and put him in his place if she needs to...they get along great. She is more friendly to other people and animals, I hoping he can learn from it.

But I think you have to start with talking to the breeder and describe to them what Parker is like.

I hope that helps you.

I agree. Talk to the breeder and let her know your dog's personality. They will be able to match them up pretty good. I was told that Shelby was very outgoing, and that is what I wanted. Kodi is more laid back. Shelby has brought him out of his shell somewhat.
