favorite travel destinations with your pup

What are some places you've enjoyed vacationing with your pup and what are some places you hope to go in the future?

One of the reasons we picked this breed was so we can travel together. I dream about vacations all the time and am a planning fanatic. Zelda is only 4 months old so we're starting easy. Our first overnight trip will be mid-August: two nights in a rental house near Shenadoah National Park. It's only about a 2-3 hour drive.

Tentative future plans:
  • probably Philadelphia for our first urban trip since it's driving distance and we can just load up the car will all her gear
  • maybe Boston for our first plane ride since it's a short cheap flight and there are walking tours where you can bring your dog
  • rental house in Sonoma County for summer 2014 or 2015 (my favorite place in the world and family could join us)

After that, who knows! I'd love suggestions.

Exciting thread! I've never taken a vacation with the dogs but we have two trips planned this year; one to Nationals in Chicago and one the first week of September. I don't know where we're going yet so also would like suggestions.

RoutineAvocado (What is your name?) let me know if you need help with Philadelphia. There are some wonderful places to stay -- like Loew's Hotel in center city that is a great starting point for a walking tour. Valley Forge is also a great place to take a long walk with your dog.

They're not my dogs -- I'm their person

We take Kodi with us pretty much everywhere. Maine has lots of dog-friendly areas, including Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and Freeport. We've been to Gettysburg, Lancaster County, Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Berkshires (western MA), Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia and PEI in Canada...

I've also heard that Charleston, SC is also vey dog friendly town.

Emmie and I have driven to Oregon 3 times and to Hood Canal 2 times. She's also flown with me to Michigan a few times and to California twice. All of our trips have been fun visiting friends and family and going on great hikes and playing on the beach. I'm very lucky that she's a great car and plane traveler, and that she loves her crates.

Mikey's only 6 months old but we've taken him to Monteray and Carmel, CA - both are super dog friendly. You can take them in the stores with you and many restaurants too - it's almost like you're in England

I love hearing about all these happy dog vacation experiences. Just this week, Zelda has really improved her potty training and leash skills so travel is starting to feel within the realm of possibility.

Lorraine - I'll let you know if we make firm Philadelphia plans and ask for more recommendations!

Karen - was there any city in Maine that you thought was better than the others?

I've taken Lexi up to New Hampshire with me a couple times. There's a really great dog-friendly B&B near North Conway called the Lazy Dog Inn. Lots of great walks and hikes with your dogs up there.

Just read tripadvisor reviews and that place sounds great! We'll probably visit New Hampshire sometime in the next few years for a triathlon at Lake Winnepesake (yes, the What About Bob? lake). Maybe we could tack on a few days at the B&B.

There are LOTS of dog-friendly areas in Maine, but I love Bar Harbor and Acadia. Many outdoor dining areas that accept dogs, and most shops don't mind you bringing a well-mannered dog in either. LOTS of beautiful hiking and places to walk. Maine doesn't have a lot of "cities", and we tend to avoid cities anyway... not our thing. I've been told that Portland is quite dog-friendly, but we've never done more than drive through on the way to Freeport.
