so my friend went to a recommended breeder [yipee] and really likes 2 of the dogs...but she has a concern....

the breeders smoke....there were several ashtrays full of butts....

so does anyone know about any impact on smoking and our pups? These pups are older [7 months].

We all hear of the danger of 2nd hand smoke and this is a lot of money to plunk down and since she's being so careful about health testing, conditions, etc. she feels that this is an issue...

any ideas?

please no one take offense...just posting a concern.

thanks.

Although not ideal, I can't imagine that would create major issues with the dogs over that period of time. I would just be thankful to get them into a smoke free environment if for no other reason than they'll smell better.

I don't know, I can't answer how it effects the dogs. My guess...is that short-term it most likely wouldn't, but several years of exposure would be more likely.

Actually, my mom and dad smoked inside their house for years and I don't remember the dogs/cats ever getting sick, but back then...everyone smoked! lol... The people I know that smoke now, smoke outside their house, so IDK.

I never thought about it, actually, but my breeder's husband smokes in the house, and our dog is fine. We got him from them at 14 weeks old, and he's now a year old and doing just fine. I don't know how long such a thing would take to surface, but so far so good.

Trish, over such a short period of time it could not cause a problem. I'm not sure of damage from long term exposure but since they are only 7 mo old that is a moot point. Frankly I'd be more concerned with their socialization and asking lots of questions regarding that issue than the smoking.

P.S. Oh, and good luck to your friend!

My breeder smoke, or altleast I smelled it. And to be honest, I agree with Jan, the socialization is so important. I am not sure about the long term effects on a pup and that is a great question. Never really crossed my mind, and that is coming from a non-smoker..... Hmmm, I have noticed Oreo barks when he smells smoke coming from the neighbors. Or that could simply be he is picking up on my annoyance. ;)

Thanks everyone!

Winston is anxiously awaiting a new playmate! LOL.

Did anyone see the havanese rescue?? I would snatch up Missy right now if DH wouldn't kill me. LOL.

They're going to talk more about it Friday....fingers crossed.
