Crud on face hard as a rock

Django has this awful crud on his face, below his eyes that's as hard as a rock. He got an eye infection in both eye and the goop that was draining from his eyes took residence just below his eyes on his face. It's as hard as as a rock. Any suggestions for cleaning? The area needs to be soaked to have any success.

I'd start with warm water on a face cloth, gently holding it in place to soften the crud. Have a handful of cloths ready and warm, keep soaking. Talk baby talk, of course, and provide some quality treats. Let us know how Django is doing, k?

Sometimes keeping the area clean and acidic (e.g. dabbing daily with a lemon juice or white vinegar solution, carefully avoiding the eye) can help, sometimes adding probiotics helps, sometimes using distilled water helps. In some cases you have to take several steps at the same time

Well, he's on a probiotic, drinks only filtered water. I found an old syringe from his many ER visits, I think i will use this filled with warm water and gently soak the area till the hard crud softens up enough to comb it out. And of course, treats close at hand.

I'd say warm water and washcloth too, but how about no tear baby shampoo?

I have tried everything under the sun. I just took the syringe with warm water and for about 35 minutes kept soaking the area. It got soft enough finally that I was able to comb out some of the crud, unfortunately a lot of his hair came with it so he has a bald spot below the left corner of his eye about 1/4 in away from his eye. I think that's going to be it for awhile.

What about putting a thin layer of Vaseline on serval times a day to see if it will gradually soften it? Of course avoid the eye...

I thought of that but then I was worried it would create a breading ground for something else, that area wouldn't be able to breath no matter how thin the vaseline. He looks pretty good today except for the bare patch below his eye close to his nose but I am sure that hair will grow back.
