I wish breeders would...

We had a wonderful experience with our Havanese breeder. However, we didn't have such a great experience with a Lowchen we tried out for a weekend last spring and it was because of the breeder. Since then I have seen others on the Hav lists post a frustration here or there for the same reasons but nobody really expounds on it. So, I just wanted to put my .02 in to breeders so things go well for all involved.

We had many issues with the Lowchen but I won't go into too much detail except for one area, housetraining. The Lowchen was 7 months old and had never been housetrained. He was a beautiful dog but his teeth had gone bad so he couldn't be a show dog. Instead of the breeder teaching him she just slapped on a belly band and that was it. He would lift his leg constantly in the house and her response was a very calm, "that's what happens with a house full of un-neutered dogs. He's smart. Just give him a treat outside and he'll learn."

I've seen others who get an older pup who assume the dog is housetrained and when they get the pup, he or she isn't at all. It's very disappointing and frustrating. Since housetraining problems are the #1 reason that toy dogs are given up, I'm trying to figure out why this happens. I mean, if a breeder is waiting to see how a dog turns out, wouldn't they want a housetrained show dog? Is this common? I just wish breeders would realize that if they are going to keep a pup until he or she is 6 months or more, it's vital to housetrain them.

Off my soapbox now...

Some of us breeders do. We potty train all our puppies from the beginning. Also teach foals to lead when they are 2 days old and teach them all sorts of manners as they grow up. I also believe that anyone who has a child should spend a lot of time reading to them when they are young. etc., etc.

Proper training from the beginning makes all of those things so much easier throughout the rest of the baby's life.

Tom, people who are lucky and get puppies from breeders like you and Pam realize that early training is like GOLD. Hard work for the breeder, but a really big payoff for the puppy's new family.
