Havanese do recognize other Havanese

So I was at a dog friendly vineyard this weekend and Audrey normally doesn't like other dogs but seemed fine with this particular one. Turns out he's a curly-haired Havanese! Tucker's mom was saying how he doesn't like other dogs either but they didn't seem to mind each other. They weren't exactly in love or playing with each other but at least they didn't bark at each other. Anyhow, we forced them to take a picture together because they were so cute!

What a cute picture. I can attest that they absolutely know their breed. My neighbor has a rescue they said was a poodle/doxie but I think he's at least part Havie. Marley, my neighbor's dog, was one of the first dogs that Timmy approached when he was a small pup and he was VERY frightened of most other dogs. He's much better now but he and Marley do seem to have a special bond and their play style is very similar.

yeah ,there is research showing dogs are particularly adept at discrimination of their own species., considering the huge variance in breeds. I haven't seen anything on their ability to distinguish their own breeds.

Zelda is shy around other dogs (we're working on it) but we met up with one of her littermates after they'd been separated over a month and they acted like they'd never been apart. Don't know if it's a Havanese thing or a littermate thing, but it was really nice to see her truly loving the company of another dog.

yeah she would recognize the smell. Dogs are primarily olfactory based.

I don't know if Hobbes recognizes other Havanese, but he most certainly has a preference for other small white dogs (maltese, poodles, mixes), ect. It's comical how reliable this preference is.
