Flea Product Advice

Hello Everyone...

I would appreciate some feed back on a good flea product. I currently have been using Frontline Flea & Tick, but I don't think that it works very well, as I have found a flea or two days after the application..

Good Question.........I agree that Frontline does not work very well. In the last month, Smarty has had 4 ticks on her that had reach a rather large stage when I found them. Each tick left a large knot under the skin, so I am sure she is having some sort of reaction to them. Frontline didn't kill the ticks, I did.

We use K9 Advantix (green box for "little bitties" under 10 lbs. ) on Tori and it seems to work very well. I like that it not only kills fleas and ticks but, also mosquitoes.

Frontline doesn't kill fleas immediately. It takes about 24-48 hours (?) after application, so unfortunately, your dog can still get bites before the flea dies. I remember this came up on the forum awhile back and Lina looked up the info on the Frontline website for us.

We got a flea for Christmas. My husband and I both saw it, and only saw the one. We could not catch it to get it off of her. We each saw it once, and did not see it again despite MUCH searching. She got a bath today, and I didn't see any fleas.

Squirt is on Revolution. I called the vet and she said that the flea had to bite for it to be killed by the Revolution. She also said not to worry overly much if we only saw one and didn't see them around the house.

We have had the exterminator spray once outside for fleas and ticks after I found a tick on Squirt. We're now going to have them spray every month.

Jane, that is correct about Frontline not killing fleas right away. Also, I heard from my vet (and other pet owners) that Frontline has become less effective lately - something about the fleas perhaps becoming immune to it? Scary stuff. Anyway, I've been recommended Advantage instead of Frontline and once flea season starts again I will be switching Kubrick from Frontline.

I use Frontline and haven't had any problems (knock on wood). It also does not kill ticks right away. It is supposed to kill ticks within 24 hours of them attaching. It takes longer than 24 hours for a tick to transmit limes disease. Brady does attract a lot of ticks during the warmer months. I have never seen a flea on him though. My vet did not recommend Advantage. She said she has seen a lot of bad side effects with small dogs.

Here is something else to consider....... "Natural Flea Control"

http://www.homeovet.net/content/lifestyle/section3.html

I gave Sammy some Frontline (our first time using this product as I didn't want to give Revolution) and with Ricky, we haven't used anything yet. With his liver issue still unresolved, I don't dare....

I think that is what is happening to Kodi. The fleas seem to like him and he is getting a severe allergic reaction. He has scratched so much, he is losing hair in places. I also use Frontline Plus and have not been happy with it. I am going to speak to my vet.

Marj, thanks for that link. It is very helpful.
