Treats From Well Meaning Guests

How do you all handle it when well-meaning family and friends show up with gifts for the dogs in the form of treats? I don't want to offend anyone - they all think I'm a snob because I have a "fancy pure bred" and I advocate against pet store puppies. Most of these treats are not something I would allow any of my dogs to eat. How can I be tactful about it?

Thanks & Merry Christmas! I hope Santy Paws was good to everyone!

Well I learned this best from my husband who isn't the most socially graceful person! Just lie and say she vomited this morning. No one is going to want you to have to clean it up so they won't feed her and that usually gets the point across Or when you have annoying little kids who keep trying to pick up your dog just say "watch out she bites" and they get back real quick

Just say thank you, take the treats and put them away. Don't allow them to give any to the dog. Maybe you can say she is allergic, or has the squirts.

Or, you could say thank you and tell them that your dogs are on a diet....and that you'll save them for "later"....

In case your guests are over long enough to see her produce perfectly fine poops...

Oh goodness, even if they are treats that I would allow my dogs to have, I never give them to the dogs right away anyway. Treats always get set aside. If it something a dog can't have, they don't get it at all. If they can, we use it for something special - training or a busy treat (like Flossies). Treats aren't handed out freely here at all, whether by us or well-meaning guests.

Smile

Cazzie got a very nice package from his cousin, Basset Hound Norman, today, with some rawhide chews among other things. He wagged his tail in thanks and even did a dance and his conga, then Mom took the chews home and gave them to another cousin who came calling, whose Mom isn't fussy about such things. Caz kept the tug toy and the stuffed goose.

Merry Christmas! Suzy and Cazzie

It is hard with th treat things I usually say thank you and say we will say them for later ..
Then I donate them to a dog who does not get a tipsy tummy . It was great when Zorro was alive but now I have to save them for someone else . AS to the Tequila - sorry that is one I will not drink - it has an adverse afect on me makes me grumpy and not happy ..
As to the cleaning woman Kara - they do make screw cap bottles of fairly nice wine . Now it is not just ripple .
Now I just give the help money - I think it is so impersonal but it is what they prefer..
So sorry Kara to hear you are having a rocky day .
Cosmo is not at his best either . He has not adjusted to being back in the desert .. He is remembers it from last year when he was a pupppy and he wants to be the boss again ..
Merry Christmas everyone .. I hope Santa was good to you all ..

You guys kill me!!! Actually, I accepted all treats with a smile and a "Thank You". The poor dogs are looking at me as if I'm the meanest Mom in the world but the treats are put aside and will 'disappear' tomorrow morning. Even the one my sister in law snuck to the dogs when I was busy in the kitchen!! It's tough being the mean mommy!!!!! But their tummys will thank me tomorrow!
