anal glands

How often do have your havs anals expressed. It seems if I go 6 weeks, Mayas are really full. Can always tell when it is time to take her in. She begins walking like a raccoon. This is usually every six weeks. Really wish I knew how to do this myself.

When Tillie was young (up till 9 months) I took her to a groomer and they did them there... I have done all her grooming since then I have done all of her grooming, but I do not know how to express the glands... I feel like everytime I give her a bath to make sure they aren't hard or anything. The vet has expressed them maybe 2 times when we happened to be in for something else... sorry. not much help.

I've always had the vet do it with my dogs.

I read somewhere that once you do it it has to be done often. Is this true? Sorry for the trivial question, I am just learning.

I don't let them do it unless my guys need it. Fred is almost 8 and had it done a few times after knee surgery. Bella is almost 9 and had it done twice. Scudder has never had it done. I think once you start, it doesn't allow the dogs body to do it by itself. If I see my guys nipping at their butt or dragging, I will give it a few days to see if it expresses by itself. If it doesn't then I get the done. It's hardly ever been a problem.

My groomer does it but I left specific instructions to only do it if they are full. I'll also mention if he's been scooting and he's only needed them drained a couple times in the course if over a year. I'm not sure if once you do it you need to keep doing it. He also needed them drained after he was neautered, I brought him back to the vet concerned his scooting was caused by the neauter. My vet said there is really no preventative for this condition and that some dogs just need it done more then others. Tim's stool has been a great consistency which help to dispel the glands so I'm keeping with my regimine. I guess if your dog has consistently soft stools it might not allow the glands to fully drain?

IFung5,..that is exactly what I thought. Jenny thanks. That makes sense that the formed stools would help to express the glands. Thanks folks,..just another think to add to my notebook.
Sorry for the topic this early in the morning,...refill on your coffee anyone LOL!

No problem. Someone recently posted a video on anal glands. The vet suggested not to express anal glands unless necessary.

That's our vet suggestion too, only when needed. Chloe had it only few times during her regular check up.

It isn't something that should be done routinely... only if it is needed. If it is done without need, the glands become less able to empty themselves. For that reason, I only let the vet do it. (no groomers)

There are some dogs, not many, where the glands are improperly placed, so that they don't empty out normally when the dog eliminates. Those dogs DO need to have their anal glands expressed on a regular basis, but again, if it were my dog, I'd have it done by the vet, and the vet can tell you what is a good schedule for your particular dog.
