Primal vs Natures Variety - Sanity Check

This question might defy the axiom - "there are no stupid questions" because it involves basic math. I am only asking because either my math scales have taken a dramatic nose dive, I'm not reading the calculations correctly or my other research has missed the mark by a mile.

7 pound Dog
8 weeks - year
No other bones
Beef

Primal Feeding Calculator = 3.5oz per Day
Nature's Variety = 5.8oz per Day

The reason I ask is because I've read and even been told that Nature's Variety is cheaper. The per pound prices are comparable in my area. Am I missing something?

Can't answer for Nature's Variety, but I feed Tim Primal 6 nuggets/day, 3 at each feeding and he seems fine, he weighs 15 pounds and I wouldn't call him fat just big. When I calculated him on Primal's site it gave me # of nuggets/day (5.8) not total oz's of food, 7lbs said about 2.5nuggets/day. Out of curiosity I went on Nature's site and plugged the same info in, 15 lbs average activity Lamb formula, and It gave me 4.8 ounces a day, 7 lbs gave me 2.9 ounces? I'm not sure about what each Primal nugget weighs though, where did you get 3.5 oz/day on the Primal site? I know when I first started Tim on Primal I had some questions so I called and they were very helpful.

I was just curious so I checked your math you are right, but I know both my boys eat a lot less than the NV calculator says a normally active dog should eat. they do better on the lowest activity calculation. But if you are talking about that cute little puppy in your picture... he will need more calories. I have 16 and 18 lb dogs and the calculator tells me to feed about the same as your 7 lb pup. What I find odd is the primal beef formula has about the same calories per ounce as the NV. primal has 64 cals. NV 65. so you would think they would eat about the same amount in ounces. (the other primal formulas are lower in calories)

if my boys were not doing so well on NV I would switch to Primal. I like that there are fewer ingredients and fewer exotic ingredients. that being said, the boys are great on Natures Variety.

I think both are great and you should use whatever you feel best about. I do like that NV has had several voluntary recalls (and they notify you if you sign up) and they send out a lot coupons which help out. I would see what the calories are of what you are feeding now and then match medallions to that to start.

more pictures of your baby please! how old?
