naughty dog

last night i was doing some obedience at a friends place. I had bought a big bag of training treats (1.5 lb) and it was in a tote bag along with the rest of her training gear (dumbells, clicker, leash, rulebooks, etc). It was on top of the bar in the hallway, but the handle of the totebag was hanging down a bit. Well, i got home from the grocery store this morning and found the bag on the floor. The treat bag was empty. 1.5lb of rich liver training treats where gone. I found a sleeping havanese with a very very swollen tummy that looked very very guilty. My big dog had a "it wasn't me" look. I called the vet, she suggested inducing vomiting on both dogs to see which one at the treats, providing lots of water, and on very very gentle slow walks, and no more food today and watch for signs of bloat.

Well, the havanese was the culprit by the look of the vomit (i don't think the big dog ate any). She slept most of the day, drank about a litre of water, pooped a bit, vomited a lot and still has quite a swollen belly. I'm prepared for a lot of poop tonight and tomorrow. I hope she has learned her lesson, but i doubt it. I know I have learned to put the treats away in the upper cupboard!

You've just got to take her off the dumbbells and get her reading the rulebook!!!

well, in my defence it was sitting on top of the bar, which is at my chest level (higher than a regular counter). i didn't think my little dog that is 11" tall could get up there! My huge labradoodle wouldn't be capable of getting up there and getting at it, but never underestimate the determination of a crafty little havanese that was put on a diet by the vet last week because she was getting a little plump from the training treats!

IN the end there was no harm done, but that much treat could cause bloat, pancreatitis, dehydration (they are salty dehydrated treats and that much can cause dehydration and electrolyte problems) in addition to the sore tummy from over eating. And, we couldn't do any training yesterday on my day off when i had a lot planned!!!

That is really a tall jump up. She should do agility. They were circus dogs.Glad she's okay. Maybe just keep enough in a bag for one session at a time and put the fest in the refrigerator. You never know she will be learning how to open the door too.
