I guess it was bound to happen...

First off, I'm sorry if this is something that I'm bringing up that will upset people or make others feel like it shouldn't be said. However, it happened to me just today and I am still processing it and trying to figure out how to respond should it happen again (an I'm pretty sure it will). Please don't flame or post things like "not this again" as I am not trying to bring anything up as to who or what is better, I just want honest opinions on how I should handle something. If you all feel like this is better left unsaid, I will remove the post, or ask Melissa to do it. Anyway, here goes:

I was at the dog park earlier today with Kubrick as it was beautiful day out (60 degrees and sunny) and I decided to enjoy the nice weather. Of course, every other dog owner out there had the same idea so the dog park was jam packed. There were FOUR Havs there, which is very impressive considering that usually there are one or two at a time (even though I meet Havs on the street pretty often, four at once is pretty rare). Kubrick was running around playing with the other dogs when another Hav and her owner came in. She was a very sweet lady with this beautiful 7 month old B&W Hav. She started to talk to me as she sat next to me.

Of course, she asks me which one was my dog so I point out Kubrick, thinking that I will have to explain that he is a Hav as even other Hav owners are surprised that he is one (most people don't think he's a Hav as I've found that at least in NY darker Havs are rare - I've yet to meet one here). Before I could say anything, she asks me "Oh is that a Havana Silk Dog?" I swear if my jaw could do this: , it would have! Now, I know that we all here on the forum know about this whole controversy, but I have yet to meet a single NY dog owner that knows about it or would even think of a dog being an HSD over a Hav.

I tell her no, that he's a Havanese and she says that she thought he wasn't because he's silky and aren't Havanese not silky and HSDs silky? Then she goes on to say that when she was calling breeders to buy a Hav she did get in touch with an HSD breeder who said that she shouldn't get a Hav because she needs the and I quote "true cuban dog" and not the "fake one." She said that she wound up not going with that breeder because she thought that she sounded too stuck up or something like that.

Whatever, that's not what I want to talk about. What I do want to talk about is how I can explain to regular people (who don't know anything about this whole controversy) what the difference is between the two. I did talk to her for about 15 minutes about my own opinion of what happened and how Havs can also be "silky" and that's not a prerequisite alone for the HSD people, but I think I confused her more than anything and I'm not sure that I got my point across.

I guess most of you wouldn't care, but I do wish I could have been more prepared for her question, if that makes sense. I just never seriously thought it would happen! I'm guessing most of you won't run into this as there don't seem to even be other Havs around you (not to mention that people don't even seem to know what a Hav is at all), but I'm guessing this will be something that will come up more and more often for me as time goes by as New Yorkers are notorious for finding the new and different.

If any of you find that this is going to start a horrible long and bad thread (you know, the one full of family pictures), please tell me and I will ask Melissa to take it down. I don't want a discussion of Hav VS HSD, I just want your opinion.

Sorry for the length of this and thanks for reading if you were able to get through it!

I thought you were going to be part of a new puppy announcement <sigh>

Actually, I think Kubrick explained it himself- by having a nice silky coat and being a havanese! I don't think I would avoid the conversation, just give your own thoughts on it, that is all you can do and recommend the Havanese Forum (Leslie is excellent at this!)

Sorry to disappoint, but FH would kill me if I got a new puppy right now! In fact, I might kill myself.

I see what you're saying Amanda, about Kubrick explaining it himself, but she just looked honestly confused and it seemed like she didn't believe me or something because I was so bad at explaining since I wasn't prepared. LOL. I guess I am just hard on myself sometimes when it comes to certain things and Kubrick is definitely one of them.

Lina,
I know exactly how you felt like you were stumbling in your conversation but it is kind of one of those subjects. I was telling a friend about it and she thought I didn't really know what was going on and she has bred dogs for 40 years

And come on what is another 5lbs of fluff for you right now!

I tell people they are the same......havana silk is another name for havanese, always was/They aren't recognised by AKC -- so they are not much different then the designer breeds out there now--puggles comes to mind. Just my 2 cents...

You may want to tell them the havana silk/havanese has been around a very long time....they are an old breed. I find people think they are part of the designer mutts.

Oh funny. Diane (Windfall Havanese) and I were just talking on the phone and we were talking about some people contacting us about pups and realized that not one person has ever brought up the silk dog stuff either of us. I get contacted all the time (just saw another email come though as I was typing this) and not one has brought it up or asked the difference.

I am going to send you one little thing via PM because I don't care to get all involved in another 75+ page topic.

Amanda, yeah, I can totally see that! It's a mess to get straight in my head, let alone talk about. And 5lbs of pooping, peeing fluff is what I'm worried about! LOL.

Julie, that sounds like a reasonable answer for someone who doesn't even know what a Havanese is, but in New York almost everyone you meet knows that they are not a designer breed and are AKC recognized. But I do see what you're saying... I'll keep that in mind for the next time for sure. Thanks!

Kimberly, that's funny! I would have expected that you and Diane would have this come up, but I guess I'm just the first and therefore super special.

Lina,

Most people in my area do not even know what a Havanese is! They just give me a puzzled look, even people who work at dog stores. Most think they are a cross breed of whatever.

I've heard of 'HSD' dogs that do not have that magicals silky coat, and have heard of Havs that do.. sooo??? lol

Beamers coat has changed alot since I started feeding him Raw. It was always soft and silky, but got even more silky soft to the point where people that pet him were like WOW! Of course with this crappy cold dry weather his coat is not as silky as it was it the warmer weather, but still good!

I don't know how I would have handled it, but I suspect I would have simply said havs come in various hair types, some silky, some not. They're all beautiful and exactly as God designed them and each is the most beautiful to his/her owner. Though Milo's hair is indeed very silky, I think I might prefer a more cottony coat next time. It might be easier to deal with.
