a tethered Jasper

So lately when the mail man starts to make his way down my street I have been leashing Jasper in an attempt to train him out of his Mail related red zones.

Jasper usually gets tense before I even see the mail truck so today when he got tense I leashed him and put the loop around my wrist- and lo and behold still no mail truck that was over an hour a ago---But my 2 year old Jasper seems really content to be tethered to me while I go about my business. (he is normally very independent --and we had never trained him this way when he was a puppy either) I expected some struggle- but he is just following me from room to room and now he is sleeping right by my chair... I do really wish the mail would come though-- I have errands to do.

Missy- I am going to need a video to really understand this! And I want to see him hooked to you when the mail man arrives! (Anyone close enough who could be the mailman for an hour as we watch Missy get dragged around the house?)

Amanda, I could be at Missy’s in 45 min. to play mailman.

Missy Jasper could be following you from room to room wondering “when is mom taking me out for a walk, geeez it takes her a long time to get ready..”

LOL! Leeann..that is probably what he's thinking!

Missy, he probably likes the special attention and thinks "Hey! Look at me, Cash, I get to be strapped to Mom...you don't! **sticks tongue out**" hehe

Have you tried any goodies in the mail yet? Flossies? Jerky? Toys? I bought some of those Wellness Venison(I think?) Jerky bites (made in USA) today at the petstore and Gucci is trying everything in her power to get more..more MORE! lol, She's on the verge of giving me a headache. lol

Missy, I hope this works with the mail delivery. It sure would be nice not to have Jasper freak out every time. It will be up to you to know ahead of time so you can be ready though. I think you're really good about wanting to do that. Good luck and keep us posted!

ha hah hah. We really should get a video camera so you can see how crazy he gets. (we don't have one but jeez we work in tv-- maybe we should have one)

Well Mailman finally came-- the leash didn't help one bit- be was like a top spinning and growling at the end of the leash. So far the thing that works the best is me scooping him up and holding him through the mail delivery and until his little body relaxes- but obviously this is not practical.

We are going to try Kara's treat through the mail suggestion this weekend when we are both home-- if that works we will start mailing treats to ourselves... can you just see Home Land Security trying to figure out what the heck two pieces of Jerky are a threat to. But I bet those bomb sniffing dogs would be interested.

Oh, I wish I could have seen Jasper tethered to you, Missy! How sweet. What did Cash think of it? Did he follow you too?

I'm in CA so I don't know if my ideas will be practical for you but here goes! One idea I have is have a treat jar or something similar on the porch and ask your mailman to shove a milkbone through the slot before dropping the mail. Maybe then Jassy will be happy when the mailman comes? Or maybe you could attach a mailbox to the outside of the house so the mailman doesn't have to put the mail into the house since that's most likely what's making Jasper so mad anyways. How do you keep him from shredding your mail? We have a mailbox across the street, so our mailman doesn't even come up the driveway but when UPS pulls in to the drive, Rufus barks like crazy to let us know about it!

These all seem to be great idea's Missy. I guess I still just have a hard time seeing Jasper acting this way, if you guys could only see the way he will walk right up to you and allow you to take his whole head in both your hands to get an ear rub staring you straight on the whole time. Jasper has these eye's and a way of looking at you that would make your whole heart melt.
