Penicillin and dogs

Has anyone had to give their dog Penicillin? We are fighting a horrible skin infection (by-product of a raging eye infection) and Django is currently on Baytril (antibiotic) which is working, slowly. The vet is suggesting to add Penicillin however everything that I am reading about it doesn't sound good. Very hesitant to give it to him.. Would love any feedback.

A bit late coming in on this, but is your vet sure positive that it is an infection? Sometimes a combination of skin and eye problems can be put down to diet...just a thought. Cuba didn't have skin problems but did have weepy eyes that were completely cleared up when I got her off food containing wheat/gluten (she is now on the utterly wonderful Ziwipeak)

I'm not a vet, nor am I an expert on canine health, but you might want to look into manuka honey. It has powerful infection killing properties and you can apply it directly to a wound. I found an article about honey from whole dog journal:

Feel better soon Django!

So glad to hear that Django is doing so well. I hope you both continue on your current path, as you both definitely deserve a break. Keep up the good work Django. We're sending good thoughts your way.

glad he's doing better. May I ask what you'\re feeding him?

Don't quite understand why you were worried about penicillin in particular? It is in fact a group of antibiotics, the first to be discovered that were effective against some serious, previously untreatable diseases. Some humans are allergic to it, just as they are to some other antibiotics. But I've never heard of anything against dogs being given penicillin. There can always be side effects with any such drug, but as I understand it they are relatively rare with penicillin unless there is a known allergy. Did your vet not want to have to use it? I'd be really interested to know what reason was given if so?? You said he'd had antibiotics but no penicillin 'thank goodness'....just wondered...???
