any advice on how to introduce the rest of the house to my 7 month old hav?

Hi, my seven month old female Hav has had the run of the familyroom and kitchen. She rarely has an accident in those rooms. I would love to take the gates down and let her wander around the rest of the rooms on the first floor but anytime I do she proceeds to poop in the new room. Today it was the diningroom...Any suggestions?

"Rarely" having an accident isn't nearly good enough to expand her territory. She has to be 100% in her current area before you try expanding it.

Dining rooms are a prime target for accidents (as are spare bedrooms) because they aren't used often, and as a result, I don't think the puppy recognizes them as part of the "living space"... this is even after they are 100% reliable in the areas that are used frequently.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Havanese puppies (and dogs) don't frequently "wander" a larger area without a mission. They tend to want to stay close to their peeps. If they wander off, it is very likely that they are looking for a secluded place to potty... or to chew up contraband!

Once she's 100% in your smaller area, introduce her to one more room at a time, but don't just let her wander in and out. Instead, go into that room with her, and actively engage her in play. Do that a LOT of times until she recognizes that this is part of "home territory" too.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks so much for the excellent advice. I will definitely give that a try. I can't wait for Lola to be able to go into the other rooms - there are some prime sunny spots for her to enjoy if she ever gets 100% potty trained. She is getting there - it is only a matter of time! P.S. I see you are in Metrowest and we are too. Do you have any groomers you like?

Yes, I use Emily Michel at Especially for Pets in Medway. Kodi is in full coat, so she only trims his nails, feet and sani area, but I have another Havanese friend who recently started using her, and loves the job Emily is doing giving her boy a longing puppy cut.

thanks for the reference

Hi! I think I know your friend. Our Havanese are in class together! Small world. She mentioned Especially for Pets in Medway to me. I will have to give it a try when Lola needs a trim. She was spayed recently and when she had her Elizabethan Collar she got matted around her neck area - even though I brushed her every day. So, she just got a short cut - I miss her long locks! It will be a while till she needs another cut. Thanks again!

A couple of things I did to make each "new" area part of the lived-in space and not "the north 40" ( my term for the unoccupied areas available, in my pup's opinion, for pee and poop) were:

- scatter feed (scattered kibble on the floor so the new space would be associated with food)
- put a bed and water in the room beside her toys (again, making the space part of the den)

and monitor, monitor, monitor

Where do you live? Scotty has been over to play with Kodi. I'm only about 10 minutes from the Medway Especially for Pets. Maybe tou and Cyndi could both bring your pups over for a play date!

I'd forgotten about the scattering food business, but that did definitely help when Kodi had accidents as a pup.

Thanks again for all your help! And, I live in Westborough- so not that far away. Yes, that would be fun to have a play-date sometime.
