How often do you feed your Hav?

Hi all,

I searched the forum but didn't find the answer that I was looking for so here it goes.

How often do you feed your Hav? I feed Monty, who is 11 months old, every morning and evening but I was under the impression that as they got older you feed them only once a day...is this true?

I've only had Monty for about 6 weeks and we've never owned a dog before so this is all new to me, any help is appreciated.

(Currently I am feeding him about 1/2 to 3/4 cup kibble, some cottagecheese, brown rice, chicken or some other meat all mixed up together. Sometimes he eats it and sometimes he doesn't.)

Thanks for your wisdom!

Heather

Hi Heather,

I think there must be like 10 threads or so on how much and when to feed your pup.. You know how i know?? I probably started more than half of them!! HAHAHAHA... yeah, I was really neurotic about these things when I first got Beamer.. (and still am probably.. lol)

I feed beamer 2 times a day. When we first got him we attempted feeding him 3 times daily, but he was not interested.. so by the time he was 4 months old was only doing 2 meals a day.

So how old is Beamer now? Is he a good eater?

It just seems like Monty is only interested in eating once a day. He rarely eats both of the meals I fix for him and it just seems like it is such a waste of food. I was thinking maybe he is just at that age where he would be better off eating once a day.

Beamer is now just over 10 months old. He eats his Raw diet twice a day. He has never liked kibble.. only when it was covered in melted cheese.. lol

Try a Raw diet with Monty, I bet he will eat 2 meals a day then!

I still put food out 2X a day and probably always will. She will skip a meal here or there, or some days..just pick at it. But, its there at 7am and 5pm every day.

I'm not sure if many people do once a day or not?

Heather,

I'm ready to try feeding Havee 1x a day. He's 1 year old. He seems very uninterested in his morning meal and will eat his eavening meal fine. It takes him about 20 minutes of looking, smelling and pacing around breakfast before he'll eat it. And then sometimes he just doesn't.

Just when we got used to his poop schedule!!

Hi Jan....I feel exactly like you do! Monty is just the same as your Havee each morning...

Sniff, sniff, he noses it and then walks away.

Sometimes if I put the food in my hand he will eat it out of my hand but that's just way too much work. Usually if he doesn't eat it with in about 30 minutes then I just pick it up and let him wait till dinner.

By then he's famished and eats like a mad dog!

Scarf, scarf and it's gone!!

I feed mine 1/4-1/2 c kibble at 6:30am and 6pm everyday. Duncan eats like a piggy, Bonnie is less interested in eating and happy to share her's with him.
A year seems a good time to go down to one feed a day, but maybe make it mid-day so they're not starving by evening. Mine are definitely not ready to eat less than twice at this point.
