Question Capote's getting the 'big snip'

My 'lovely' job is finally giving me some extra money, so I can get the 'procedure' done next week. I've delayed for a while simply because I wasn't sure if I wanted to show him, and because I thought it was so darned much...when in actuality, my vet only charges 90 dollars for it! The kicker and what made me laugh was he was like..'that's just for the procedure. If you want pain medication or bloodwork done then it'll be extra'.

Two things on that. Firstly..umm..if you were getting your nether regions chopped off...wouldn't you want pain meds?? Rofl...cause I certainly would. So I told him yes definately to that. But do I need to get bloodwork done at that time? Is it necessary?

Lemme know

Mindy,
All the best to Capote in his future procedure.

With regard to the labwork (pre-anesthetic work up), we opted in for this when our little one had his procedure performed -- the two bonuses being 1) having the ability to identify and screen for any significant pathology with Capote, your vet might not be aware of through a simple physical examination. And 2) we kept a copy of his blood work (Modified Chemistry Panel (an assessment of both renal and hepatic function) and a Compete Blood Count) to serve as a baseline "normal" should Hank have any problems in the future.

Regards,
'Lo

Well he's had bloodwork done before during his vaccines and such and all of that's ok. I was just wondering if there was any other need for bloodwork at that time. He has to go in for is 1 year vaccines in about 2 months so I'm sure he'll get all that good stuff done once more.

Mindy,

Good luck. We will be thinking about Capote. Sending him Hav hugs & kisses.

I would say he would want pain medicine. I would too.

Don't forget to pick up a onesie. I got Houston a Medium but it will depend on Capote's size. Onesies work so much better than a collar.

Someone may have to correct me but doesnt the blood work help identify if they may have an allergic reaction to the anesthesia?

Mindy I remember Kimberly talking about different kinds of anesthesia in a different thread, you may want to PM her about it to find out what is best.

Sending over Big hugs & kisses to Capote.

Leeann,
I don't believe the Chemistry Panel and CBC would indicate any risk for an allergic anesthetic reaction, but rather they serve as markers for our little one's tolerance to anesthesia and concomitant surgical procedure.

Mindy, I would ask your vet about the "blood work" that was performed prior to his vaccinations. They may prove too far in the past to be a good measure of Capote's current health status. That being said, many millions of dogs undergo spay and neuter procedures without pre-anesthetic labs and do just fine.

Regards,
'Lo
