Unhappy Moving

Hello havanese lovers!

I need some advise. We are moving houses. Great for humans but may not be so great for my pup, Lucas.. We currently live next door to his best friend. They are obsessed with each other and inseparable! They are the same age and have been friends since day one They go on walks and play together almost every day and are true besties!

I'm a little concerned about how Lucas will take it once we move and his bestie is no longer around.. I'm afraid he may go into depression or be sad or even become grumpy or violent.

How should i handle this? Im thinking about slowly weening him off his bestie and reducing their walks and play time together.

Im a first time pup owner and have not gone through this before, so any advice is great advice! Many thanks!

Are you moving real far away, would it be possible to have play dates?

Both of our schedules are pretty busy, so right now we just have 15 min play dates in the hall of our apt building. We will probably have many play dates in the beginning, but I'm sure over time they will become less frequent, especially in the winter months...

That is the answer to your question. It seems the move and your schedules will simply result in a slow diminishing of play dates with his buddy. As long as you spend time playing with Lucas he will adjust to the new arrangement. You may find that w/o the playtime Lucas has with his buddy that he will have much more pent up energy that you have to work harder to expend. Otherwise that energy may come out in destructive behaviors.

I'm not sure the best way to handle this but your idea seems like a good one. He will adjust. When I divorced my dogs lost their best bud a chocolate lab. My 2 pups really love the lab like their father as they would often cuddle with the big dog as wee pups. I would bring them to see him from time to time, but they no longer saw him daily. They adjusted to both the move and not seeing Coco.

My advice would be do some walks around you new hood as soon as you move in. You will meet your neighbors and their dogs that way
